Saint-Julien is a commune in the Medoc region of Bordeaux. It is located just south of Pauillac. The wines are made mostly from Cabernet Sauvignon. Because it has no First Growths, it is often underrated and a source of value. It is, however, the home of several prestigious estates, such as Leoville-Las-Cases.

  • Beychevelle 2012

Elegant, hightoned and floral on the nose with herbal complexity already accenting the red fruit, this has a very fine and balanced nose. Rigid, slightly austere and upright in the mouth, there is elegance and subtlety on display here with fresh, bright fruit, transparent and bright. I love the intensity of the fruit which comes with only modest... Read More

  • Sarget de Gruaud Larose St. Julien 2009

This second wine of the the vaunted (good value) 2nd growth Gruaud-Larose provides good color, an intoxicating scent of cedar box, candied cherries and cigars ( perhaps those cigars worthy of delivery to General Grant after Ft. Donalson). While lacking some density on the palate, this is a fine wine for current consumption. Excellent value; may... Read More

  • Château Leoville Barton St. Julien 2008

Spicy and oaky on the nose with graphite and dried herbs layered over hard, fresh black currant fruit. Dry, hard and austere in the mouth. Theres some nuanced blackberry fruit on the palate and this feels a little extracted but its well balanced with great length. Tannic and hard, this is too lean to be from california. I bet its Bordeaux. Not a... Read More

  • Chateau Gloria 2006

This highly regarded wine has some presence in my cellar, perhaps because, as Stephen Brooks notes, there is something slightly wild in each bottle. On the nose, there is sweet blueberry and wood (cedar) with just a hint of cloves. Inviting. On the palate, there is that harder tannin, with more blackberry and currant plus a mildly alcoholic, ...
