Médoc Wine

Geographically the Medoc is the entire peninsular north of the City of Bordeaux but the appellation of that name for red wines created in 1936 only refers to the 16 communes at the northern end. The area is sometimes called the Bas-Medoc or Lower-Medoc [though not on wine labels] There are no classed growths here although there are a number of Cru Bourgeois estates.

It did not always carry such prestige. Until the Dutch drained it in the mid-17th century, the Medoc was only a salt marsh.Wine making really got going at the begining of the 18th century. The wines tend to be made mostly from Cabernet Sauvignon.

  • Chateau Cantemerle Haut-Médoc 2006

    Snoothrank:

This 2006 is a very fine wine, but has been marred by too much oak; an earlier tasting showed that at least 10 years was required to tame this excess. Today ( Feb 2017) the wine is far more refined, the dry, cedar bark and blackberry nose and entry is smoother, but still quite tannic; there is a lot of oak. A tasty wine without doubt, but prod...
