Graves Wine

Graves

Graves is a very important part of Bordeaux, located downstream (south) of the city of Bordeaux, south of the Medoc. The name refers to its gravelly soil. The Medoc was just a swamp and it was Graves that produced the best wines of the region until the Dutch drained the Medoc in the 17th century. The region is known for white wines, especially (but not only) botrytized dessert-style ones like Sauternes, but is also home to Haut-Brion, one of the original First Growths, and, in fact, produces more Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated reds than whites.

Graves on Snooth

  • We live in the far South West of England, a long way from the usual cross ... ... Selve (under same ownership) Graves. This wine is made from 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon. It is aged for 14 months in barrels. The colour of this wine is an intense ruby with purple tones at the rim. The nose is spicy, peppery with dark fruits and cherri... Read More

  • Château Lamothe Bouscaut Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend Pessac-Léognan 1998

    Snoothrank:

Parker really disliked this one, but I found it much better than he gives it credit for. Powerful nose; smooth on first taste. Not as much fruit as Id like, but notes of tobacco, cedar, chocolate-covered cherries, and tar. The tannins had mellowed nicely. Mid-length finish. Read More

  • Château Olivier Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend Pessac-Léognan Blanc 1995

    Snoothrank:

Tasted October 2008: Chateau Olivier (red and white) is an uneven performer among the Grands Crus Classés from Pessac-Léognan, but this white wine is really interesting. Light golden hue, fascinating, expansive oaky bouquet with a lot of spiciness. In the mouth rather lean, very dry and a bit hollow, but also very nutty and very oaky. In the aft... Read More

  • I was hoping for some opinion regarding this wine. I was given a bottle on my 40th birthday and told to hide it in the cellar til my 50th. The big day is coming this winter and i will be opening the bottle. I have never tasted a wine of this character and would love some decanting, breathing, serving suggestions. Any ideas would help. thanks Read More
