Bordeaux Controlée, a.k.a. Bordeaux AOC, is an appellation covering wines produced all over the Bordeaux region of France. These are wines that are not produced from grapes grown exclusively in the specific AOCs such as Margaux or Pomerol, but are either sourced from a variety of different vineyards or use different grape blends and aging methods otherwise not permitted within the other AOCs. These are considered the Bordeaux bargain wines, and in most cases, lack the aging potential and grace of more prestigious appellations. However, in the right hands, these can still be excellent values with good flavor structure.

The grapes consist of all the regional grapes, produced as single varietal releases or in blends. For reds, these are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Carmenère, and Petit Verdot. For whites, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Muscadelle, Ugni Blanc, Colombard, Mauzac, and Ondenc. Styles include dry reds, whites, and rosé and the Read more »

  •  27th July 2013, Ormond Hall, St Kilda RdIt is well-evident that there is no shortage of Rhone-inspired wines in Australia. We certainly have vineyards which bask in similar weather conditions as the Rhone Valley. One could argue that a key missing element would be the round river rocks atop the clay soils which retain heat to intensify the summ... Read More

  • As you can read HERE, I was quite a big fan of most 2012 barrel samples from Moueix on the Right Bank in Bordeaux. 2012 is generally not an en primeur purchase, but some wines seem worth the ticket. For example, Chateau Trotanoy, one of the wines of the vintage - correctly scored by the still Almighty One, Bob Parker - was almost gone before any... Read More

  • Xavier Flouret Red Bordeaux Blend Premières Côtes de Blaye Quai Lumiere 2009

    Snoothrank:

Oak-driven aroma with blackberry and mild vanilla notes, lots of nuttiness and herbal qualities. The body has a slightly gritty feel that I like, with good supporting tannins that match the alcohol level, which is noticeable but not too hot. Notable cherry fruit on the finish. Read More

  • Xavier Flouret Red Bordeaux Blend Premières Côtes de Blaye Quai Lumiere 2009

    Snoothrank:

Rather fruit driven on the nose on the fresh end of the fruit spectrum with attractive notes of red currants and vanilla/strawberry topped with hints of dates, a touch of tarragon, a hint of scorched earth and some well-measured oak spice. Deceptively light on entry, this actually delivers a really nice package of slightly earthy, anise spiced c... Read More

  • Sirius Rouge Bordeaux Aoc 2007

    Snoothrank:

After breathing for a bit, the wine has a lovely nose of oak, anise, and some spicy notes. The taste is very Bordeaux, but it also reminds me of a number of the wonderful American Bordeaux blends coming out of the pacific northwest, with ripe fruit at the outset, transitioning into black pepper spice and finishing with some very mellow tannins ... • Chateau du Grand-Maine Bordeaux 1988

    Snoothrank:

I bought this wine for £5 when I went to visit a gentleman in Sussex who buys the cellar contents at house clearances.I have not been able to find out very much about this Chateau but it is an Appellation Bordeaux Contolee and my bottle had obviously been well cellared as the cork was so sodden with wine when I opened it that it broke up.It was...
