Crémant d'Alsace (sparkling wine made by the traditional method). Defined in 1976, this represents 22% of total production. At the end of the last century, several companies in Alsace, established both in the vineyard area and in the cities of Strasbourg and Mulhouse, produced sparkling wines using the Champagne method. This tradition, somewhat in decline during the first half of the 20th century, was maintained until AOC Crémant d'Alsace status was awared by the decree of 24th August 1976. This decree gives Alsace wine producers the new framework necessary for the production of quality sparkling wines, with requirements that are comparable to those imposed on Champagne producers themselves. Today, over 500 producers belong to the Syndicat des Producteurs de Crémant d'Alsace (Crémant d'Alsace Producers' Union). Crémant d'Alsace owes its elegance and originality to the unique character of the grape varieties of Alsace, allied to the natural advantages enjoyed by its vineyards : a dry and sunny climate, slopes that face the rising sun, and special geological characteristics. Grapes for the production of Crémant d'Alsace are generally picked first, at the very start of the harvest, Read more »

Crémant d'Alsace on Snooth

  • Dunn's almost getting ready to drink. Curious how you find the Leoville Barton. Think I've only had two from that decade. The naughties was the beginning of my distancing from Bordeaux, though it was the single region I'd drank the most of in my life to that point. Was buying for a rooftop BBQ today. Buy, transport, pop and pour, something I try... Read More

  • I've tasted an entry level Turgy product and really liked it for the money. The best vintage bubbly recently was a 2002 Piper Heidsieck "Rare" blanc de blancs.  It was the most laser-like Champagne I've had in a long time as far as balance and intensity of fruit are concerned. As it warmed in the glass a generous array of stone fruits emerged wi... Read More

Fruity and bright with pear and apple fruit topped with a hint of clay and quinine and a touch of sweet gum. Moderately sweet on entry though with great acids keeping things fresh in the mouth. Simple and easy going with sweet yellow apple fruit. The RS here really adds some weight on the palate. Mousse dissipate fairly quickly. easy, fresh swee... Read More

  • Albrecht Cremant d'Alsace Brut Rose' NV

A little incense and spice greets the nose followed by hints of cranberry fruit and a touch of golden apple with a slight mineral accent. Very smooth and soft in the mouth with subtle cranberry and strawberry flavors up front yielding to more typical apple and earthy yeasty flavors on the backend. Just a touch sweet and attractively firm on the ... Read More

Mineral, fresh and yeasty with sweet herbal nuance on the nose with lovely hints of butter cookies and a touch of fennel seed spice on the nose. Starting out fairly dry in the mouth, this does gain a gentle sweetness on the midpalate displaying attractive sweet/tart apple and pear fruits with a little powdered sugar accent to the butter cookie n... • Paul Zinck Cremant d'Alsace Brut 2009

Yet another poor man's champagne that has good effervescence and a toasty vanilla-citrus nose. The carbon dioxide is a bit coarse on the palate, but there is good acidity with citric acid (lemon) predominating in a clean, friendly, eye-opening kind of way. Decent Alasatian bubbly - especially at the very cheap price I got it (and I am not tell... Read More
