Ammerschwihr is a picturesque commune located in the Haut-Rhin part of Alsace. It contains the Grand Cru Kaefferkopf as well as part of Wineck-Schlossberg. Kaefferkopf has the distinction of being the very first named vineyard site in Alsace to have its borders defined, but it was not classified as a Grand Cru until 2006. This was because there was a traditon of belnding at this site. Generally, Alsace Grands Crus are restricted to varietal wines from “noble” varieties. In addition, the soil here is geologically diverse rather than uniform. Finally, a decision to recognize Kaefferkopf’s historic importance was made. Today, the wines can be made from a blend of Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Muscat, and Pinot Gris.

Ammerschwihr on Snooth

  • Lucien Albrecht Riesling Réserve 2010

    Snoothrank:

A bit waxy on the nose with with floral and spice notes framing a modest core of dusty white fruit. Supple and round in the mouth, this is easy going with mineral flecked golden apple flavors that are supported by firm yet integrated acidity. Theres a touch of mintiness in the mouth and hints of red berry fruits as well all leading to a clean, d... Read More

  • Domaine Weinbach Riesling Reserve Personelle 2011

    Snoothrank:

Complex and inviting on the nose where subtle orange rind, almond, wild flower and creamy peach aromas are deftly woven together. Bright and rather effusive on entry, theres a nice mineral note up front followed by bright if subtle peach and lemon flavors all layered over dried grass and pressed flowers aromas with a hint of honeycomb on the bac... Tasted 10/13: Golden topaz hue, with aromas of dried pith, dried yellow stone fruit and summer flowers; big notes upfront of yellow stone fruits round in the mouth with an under current of minerals, racing to a short finish. Read More

  • Josmeyer Pinot Gris Alsace Grand Cru Aoc Hengst 2005

    Snoothrank:

Deeply aromatic with apple, spice and dried herbal aromas wrapped in a gently nutty and honied robe. On entry thisretains a trace of sweetness adding more richness more than sweetness today, filling out the mid-palate and its attractive blend of faded apple fruit, honey and dried floral tones. Rather elegant and long on the finish which again sh... Read More
