Ammerschwihr is a picturesque commune located in the Haut-Rhin part of Alsace. It contains the Grand Cru Kaefferkopf as well as part of Wineck-Schlossberg. Kaefferkopf has the distinction of being the very first named vineyard site in Alsace to have its borders defined, but it was not classified as a Grand Cru until 2006. This was because there was a traditon of belnding at this site. Generally, Alsace Grands Crus are restricted to varietal wines from “noble” varieties. In addition, the soil here is geologically diverse rather than uniform. Finally, a decision to recognize Kaefferkopf’s historic importance was made. Today, the wines can be made from a blend of Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Muscat, and Pinot Gris.

The nose showed spicy florals, lychee and tropical fruits. On the palate, it entered with a rush of juicy, ripe peach and citrus but quickly fell short, lacking presence at it's center. The finish was medium in length, pleasant and mouth-watering. (86 points) Read More

I had really forgotten how much I love Alsatian wine. This one brought back the love. Full of creamy raisin fruit flavors with lime zest solid from nose to swallow, richly dimensional with a crisp structured finish. Read More
