Alsace Grand Cru (always followed by the name of one of the 51 vineyards that have been delimited within this Appellation). Defined in 1975, these 51 delimited named vineyards represent 4% of total production. While Alsace wines are traditionally known by their familiar grape names : Sylvaner, Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Muscat d'Alsace, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Noir, the Appellation Alsace Grand Cru gives an added dimension, "terroir", the unique influence of the vineyard itself on the wine. Fifty-one sites have been delimited according to strict criteria of geology and micro-climate, to make up the mosaic of Alsace Grand cru vineyards. These exceptional vineyards vary in size from 3 to 80 hectares, each having its own specific character and personality, according to its geology, aspect and slope. With an annual average of more than 45 000 hl, Alsace Grand Cru wines represent only 4 % of total Alsace wine production. Alsace Grand Cru on Snooth

  • A ridiculous number of trigger pullworthies in this new offering, many in their absolute drinking prime. Wish the shop was just down the street from me, rather than the ones that are. But then I'd have to live in NYC.  ;-(I love it when a guy drops 100 cases on a shop, just to 'make some space" in his cellar. Wonder what's going to be filling th... Read More

  • Pfaffenheims Alsace Grand Cru Steinert Gewürztraminer 2009

    Snoothrank:

A huge, juicy gewürztraminer!!! Intensely fragarent nose that explodes with notes of lychee, white flowers, and slight notes of banana. More of the same on the palate - a rich tropical fruit cocktail. Good acidity. Dry to off dry - sweeter and fuller bodied than the crisper, cool climate, new world gewürztraminer to which I'm more accustomed. Read More

  • Josmeyer Pinot Gris Alsace Grand Cru Aoc Hengst 2005

    Snoothrank:

Deeply aromatic with apple, spice and dried herbal aromas wrapped in a gently nutty and honied robe. On entry thisretains a trace of sweetness adding more richness more than sweetness today, filling out the mid-palate and its attractive blend of faded apple fruit, honey and dried floral tones. Rather elegant and long on the finish which again sh... Read More

  • Schlumberger Pinot Gris Grand Cru Spiegel 2007

    Snoothrank:

Intense on the nose with lots of heirloom apple notes, a touch of gaminess, and layers of dried floral spice, white pepper, and hints of caramel and honeycomb. Smooth and polished in the mouth, this has a wonderful texture but it does lack the intensity of flavors that marks the best examples of Alsace Pinot Gris. The fruit is a bit in the backg... • Greetings,This past Saturday, I had the pleasure of tasting through several vintages and terroirs of Domaine Paul Blanck in Kientzheim, just near Kaysersberg - prime real estate in terms of Alsatian terroir. AAlthough they did not have any 2010s to taste - 2010 counts as one of the best vintages in the last 25 years in Alsace - it was great to t... Read More
