Cotes du Rhone is the most generic appellation in the Southern Rhone. Its reach is gigantic. Most of the wines are fruity, Grenache-based, and inexpensive. The maximum yields are high -- 50 hl/ha -- and the majority of the wines are, well, bistro wines. There are, however, a few quality-minded producers of Cotes du Rhone, and many more solid, reliable ones. The prices are good, so those wines are well worth seeking out.

  • I saw that Jemrose offer and was sorely tempted.  A real Cote du Rhone knockout.  Alas, I'm bursting at the seams and need to save money right now, between my Italian lark and getting the addition on the house set to go.  If we go ahead with the renovation, I'll have to store my wine until we finish, so I don't want to go on expanding... althoug... • Ok, here's the site: about-france.com, proffering 'French wines--a short guide'. Maybe you have to be just a little wine-geeky and well interested in French wines to catch the absurdity, but I wonder how many poor souls have been led astray by the very confused writer up to now? Too many people tend to believe published material, even on the Int... Read More

  • I have to agree with D about CdP. Back in the 70s and before, people called ... attention and respect.Where Cote du Rhone sits today in the hierarchy of things was where CdP once was.Another thing Parker did, and for which he should get credit IMO, was champion cleaner winemaking, which he found in California. CdPs were brett factories. Actual... Read More

  • For March, my tasting group explored the length of the Rhône valley.  Probably for consistency of quality, one of our best tastings to date with just about all o the wines showing well and being universally liked by all.  I was lucky to find/have access to some older vintages from estate sales and store cellars, so it made for a fun night.  Here... • Morel Cotes du Rhone Villages Signargues 2010

    Snoothrank:

Red and black fruit on the nose along with herbs and pepper. Black cherry, hints of licorice, damp earth and garrigue. Medium bodied on the palate with gritty tannins, yet an elegance all around. It's spicy and peppery with plum, red and black berry fruit. Some green notes, but in a welcome manner.89 pts. Read More

  • I am not super familiar with Paso Robles and was even a bit apprehensive to go thinking all their wines were the big, over-extracted high alcohol fruit bombs I have had at times before.  A couple friends and I went for the weekend, staying in San Luis Obispo and want to Paso one day and Santa Maria/LosOlivos the second. On day one, we got there ...
