Cotes du Rhone is the most generic appellation in the Southern Rhone. Its reach is gigantic. Most of the wines are fruity, Grenache-based, and inexpensive. The maximum yields are high -- 50 hl/ha -- and the majority of the wines are, well, bistro wines. There are, however, a few quality-minded producers of Cotes du Rhone, and many more solid, reliable ones. The prices are good, so those wines are well worth seeking out.

  • Cotes du Rhone Marechal de Valban 2003

I bought this bottle of wine from the website for £3.99. Cotes du Rhone is a term that has been used to describe red, white and rose wines from the Rhone valley between Vienne and Avignon since the 17th century although viticulture here goes back to before the Romans. AOC status was awarded in 1937.My bot... Read More

  • LuckyLucy, let me also welcome you to Snooth!  If you're looking for "black cherry, milk chocolate, earthy & even smoky notes that's not so tannic" I'd suggest an older southern Rhone. Many of the grenache, syrah, mourvedre blends have loads of dark cherry and earth, but may be a bit on the tannic side when young. Châteauneuf-du-Pape (a bit pric... Read More

Rather dark for a CdR with lots of dark fruit on the nose. Sweet dark fruit on entry with little acid and soft tannins. Long finish with a nice bit of redeming licorice. Read More

  • Hi Gina,I wouldn't expect much from these wines.  They're pretty ... ... I thought maybe the Cote du Rhone might be okay, but it too might be past it's prime as I don't think it had a lot to offer on release.  Basically, I'd have a nice dinner and open all of them.  Have some back ups just in case these aren't standing up to the meal! Good lu Read More

  • I saw that Jemrose offer and was sorely tempted.  A real Cote du Rhone knockout.  Alas, I'm bursting at the seams and need to save money right now, between my Italian lark and getting the addition on the house set to go.  If we go ahead with the renovation, I'll have to store my wine until we finish, so I don't want to go on expanding... althoug... • Ok, here's the site:, proffering 'French wines--a short guide'. Maybe you have to be just a little wine-geeky and well interested in French wines to catch the absurdity, but I wonder how many poor souls have been led astray by the very confused writer up to now? • I have to agree with D about CdP. Back in the 70s and before, people called ... attention and respect.Where Cote du Rhone sits today in the hierarchy of things was where CdP once was.Another thing Parker did, and for which he should get credit IMO, was champion cleaner winemaking, which he found in California. CdPs were brett factories. Actual... Read More
