Valle Central, or Central Valley, is a large expanse of Chile that is one of the most significant wine producing regions in South America. It starts with the Maipo Valley around Santiago, all the way to the Maule Valley. There are many different types of terroirs and microclimates within it, as well as styles of viticulture from old school to modern.

Valle Central is divided into four subregions, from north to south (and warmest to coolest):
*Maipo, the country’s most historic region, planted since the 16th century and home to the country’s oldest existing wineries. Closest to the capital Santiago.
*Rapel Valley, home to the famous Colchagua and Cachapoal subregions.
*Curico Valley, pioneered in the 1970s by Miguel Torres and his disciples of modern viticulture.
*Maule Valley, one of the most prolific wine-producing regions in all of South America.

Most wines labeled as Central Valley or Valle Central can come from anywhere within these subregions Read more »

    Snoothrank:

For a syrah of under 10 bucks this is an excellent though uncomplicated Syrah... delicious vanilla, floral and of course the trademark berry blend, a great mouth feel and a very nice finish. It is light and likable I recommend this one particularly to anyone trying to introduce themselves to reds. Read More

  • Concha Y Toro Red Bordeaux Blend Cabernet Merlot Selección 2007

    Snoothrank:

My parents really enjoy this wine. They buy it in mass quantities (6 magnums) from Sam's and finish a bottle in about 3 days. That being said, this wine is an enjoyable "house wine" that is nice to have around. This wine is medium bodied with medium dryness. You can taste slight tannins with a hint of spicy berry. Being a mass produced wine, it ... Read More

  • Espiritu de Chile Cabernet-Shiraz Blend 2006

    Snoothrank:

This is about the sweetest Sauvignon Blanc I have ever tasted. At 13.5% alcohol, I would guess that the winery added sugar to boost both the sweetness and the alcohol content. This is a fairly blonde wine for a Sauv. Blanc, yet it tastes very fresh-- not far from the vine and not long out of the tank. Read More
