Valle Central, or Central Valley, is a large expanse of Chile that is one of the most significant wine producing regions in South America. It starts with the Maipo Valley around Santiago, all the way to the Maule Valley. There are many different types of terroirs and microclimates within it, as well as styles of viticulture from old school to modern.

Valle Central is divided into four subregions, from north to south (and warmest to coolest):
*Maipo, the country’s most historic region, planted since the 16th century and home to the country’s oldest existing wineries. Closest to the capital Santiago.
*Rapel Valley, home to the famous Colchagua and Cachapoal subregions.
*Curico Valley, pioneered in the 1970s by Miguel Torres and his disciples of modern viticulture.
*Maule Valley, one of the most prolific wine-producing regions in all of South America.

Most wines labeled as Central Valley or Valle Central can come from anywhere within these subregions Read more »

  • Frontera Red Vintage 2011

    Snoothrank:

My local store sells this 750 bottle of wine 3 for $10, and it compares more to a $10 to $12 wine. It is deep purple, well balanced, with a very nice finish. At this price it makes a superb everyday wine that can also be enjoyed with a good cheese or a nice steak. Simply a winner at a ridiculously low price. Read More

  • Wonderlust Chardonnay 2011

    Snoothrank:

Light aromas of dried honeycomb, hints of flowers, apples and old wood greet the nose. Frankly sweet on entry, this has weight in the mouth, and feels a bit sticky and ponderous even with acidity that is sufficient to help keep this balance. The flavors seem a bit tired with nutty accents and an intensity that is thinning on the midpalate. Shor... Read More

  • Apaltagua Carmenere Rose 2012

    Snoothrank:

Citrus hints and a hint of dirt. A faint hint of vanilla in there too. Tart, but there's a good hint of fruit in there. Certainly not the roses from years go by. I'd certainly buy it again. Read More

  • Concha Y Toro Cabernet-Syrah Blend Casillero del Diablo 2009

    Snoothrank:

We paired this wine with a slow cooked beef burgundy dish. It was light and a little too fruity for a savory beef dish. Kind of acidic too. On its own, it is an interesting full wine. Read More

  • Emark, you sat through Beethoven's Fifth twice?  I could research, maybe find an answer and pretend I knew all along but ever since being dragged to everyone one of my oldest sister's Saturday performances with the SF Youth Orchestra on beautiful days when I could have been out playing ball, I've been allergic to symphonic music.  Not bitter at ...
