The Coquimbo Valley is a region that encompasses the Elqui, Limarí and Choapa Valleys in northern Chile. The low altitude area is very hot and dry, close to the Atacama desert.

Most of the grapes in the region are harvested for the distillation of Pisco, the national brandy. However, some quality wine production has emerged in recent years thanks to modern irrigation and rock-clearing for plantings in places with higher altitudes into the Andes.

Red wines are produced mainly from Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Whites from Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.

  • Viña Falernia Pedro Ximénez 2006

    Snoothrank:

This is one of those instances where I feel I must have had a different wine from the other reviewers. What others refer to as "charred black cherry fruit" and "distinctive grilled flavor," had to me the faint taste of burnt rubber. This was not nearly as pronounced as in some South African wines that I've tried, for instance, but it did not m... Read More

  • Viña Falernia Pedro Ximénez 2006

    Snoothrank:

From Chile's northernmost wine estate. Grapes sourced in the Elqui Valley. Malolactic fermentation.Full bodied. Pepper, smoke, game, plum. Smooth tannins. I purchased 3 bottles and finished them quickly. I decided to return for a case, but missed out. Looking to find more. I want to cellar some of this, even though it is such an inexpensive wine... • Tabali Reserve Merlot 2006

    Snoothrank:

Intense ruby in color with powerful red fruit aromas, plums, blackberries and a touch of cassis, leather and spice. Toasty notes of vanilla and caramel come from aging in barrels. On the palate it is concentrated and harmonious, with silky tannins and intense, polished finish. Read More

  • Tabali Reserve Carmenere Limari 2006

    Snoothrank:

Tabali Reserve Carmenere 2006My impression: It really surprised me its exquisite complexity, founded on the contradiction of the clash between a first pepperish contact with a chocolate end, which evokes the casks of French Oak where they lodged for one year. Agreeable meeting with the vineyard Tabalí, which sublimated the simplicity of a "cazu... Read More
