Colchagua Valley Wine

Colchagua Valley is set close to the Coastal Range and to the sea. It is largely recognized as a traditional wine-growing region and is one of the best-known in Chile. This region offers big red wines, 90% of the region’s plantings, made from Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, and old vine Malbec. Climates in Colchagua vary, ranging from the Andes foothills to the cooler areas of Marchigue and Lolol which are closer to the Pacific Ocean.

There is a large range of soils here from fertile alluvial soils on the valley floor to sand and decomposed granite on the hillsides; in the west, schist, volcanic sands, and slate can also be found. Some of Chile’s top wineries are located in the Colchagua Valley and take great advantage of the hilly terrain to achieve optimum ripeness. Micro-areas such as Apalta, where Lapostelle’s Clos Apalta and Montes’ Alpha ‘M’ can be found, San Fernando, and Chimbarango offer more significant diurnal differences which help to bring out Read more »

  • Primus Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Christmas 2014, gift from my mother. Consumed between the Christmas and New Year's 2015. I consumed my portion of this bottle after it had been opened for a few days. However, it satisfied me. I had it with a flank steak braciole I made for New Year's Eve dinner. Nice gift from my Mother who on 1/2/16 will turn 90. Read More

  • Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite Los Vascos Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Binny's 12/2014. Some said it tasted thin. As the original stone tongue, I have no idea what that means. However, I had two sips and I thought it was all around splendid. Especially considering the price. Read More

  • Vina Montes Alpha Syrah Case Of 2010

Had this at CRU at Love Field while waiting for my flight. A very interesting bottle, but not at all like the following Wine Makers' Notes: 'Color: Intense red with purple highlights. Aroma: Complex and expressive, subtly mixed with aromas of violets and cherries, in balance with the dark chocolate notes and toasted flavor from its oak aging. Pa... Read More

  • Primus the Blend Veramonte Colchagua Valley 2010

Nothing very special, but nothing too bad either, more like something to depend on from a wine list when nothing else seems appropriate for a specific experience...similar to the posted Wine Maker's notes: '...full-bodied; layered with blackberry, cherry, dried plums, and a hint of cocoa...' • Montgras Antu Ninquen Syrah 2012

This is a Chilean wine which I generally buy few of. Picked this up at Costco when they were out of my go to wine. Antu syrah is fruit forward with lots of dark fruit on the nose and palate. It is surprisingly acidic and ends with a nice tannic bite. Nice wine. Read More

  • Quintay Carmenere Clava Reserve 2012

Youthful and quite fruity on the nose with hints of plummy fruit intertwined with some spicy oak and gently vegetal braised greens notes all bound up with sweet scents of caramel. Rich and a touch sweet on entry with soft tannins and integrated acidity supporting a nice ball of rich if somewhat indistinct dark fruit on the palate. The wood is no... Read More
