Colchagua Valley Wine

Colchagua Valley is set close to the Coastal Range and to the sea. It is largely recognized as a traditional wine-growing region and is one of the best-known in Chile. This region offers big red wines, 90% of the region’s plantings, made from Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, and old vine Malbec. Climates in Colchagua vary, ranging from the Andes foothills to the cooler areas of Marchigue and Lolol which are closer to the Pacific Ocean.

There is a large range of soils here from fertile alluvial soils on the valley floor to sand and decomposed granite on the hillsides; in the west, schist, volcanic sands, and slate can also be found. Some of Chile’s top wineries are located in the Colchagua Valley and take great advantage of the hilly terrain to achieve optimum ripeness. Micro-areas such as Apalta, where Lapostelle’s Clos Apalta and Montes’ Alpha ‘M’ can be found, San Fernando, and Chimbarango offer more significant diurnal differences which help to bring out Read more »

Colchagua Valley on Snooth

  • Los Vascos Carmenere Grande Reserve Colchagua Valley 2013

    Snoothrank:

Herbal notes of eucalyptus and green pepper in the glass, though plenty of dark cherry and blackberry/raspberry fruit. Similar flavors continue through to the palate, where they are joined by rich spice and generous tannins, more dark blackberry and an increasing intensity of lingering earthiness towards the finish. • Montes Cabernet Sauvignon Alpha 2013

    Snoothrank:

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Montes Alpha is distinctively Chilean (or antipodal) in style, but very French in flavour profile - with perhaps a bit more purity than a Cab dominated Bordeaux A. C. Cedar shank and blackberry dominate the nose and a slightly tart, blackberry entry with oak tannin tends to mark the entry. Finish has some pucker, but... Read More

  • Gran Reserva Serie Riberas Sauvignon Blanc 2015

    Snoothrank:

Chunky papaya, green melon and fresh lime notes on the nose of this fruit forward wine. This is expressive and zesty in the mouth showing good power and length and a mostly citrus palate of lime and grapefruit with a good dose of spice warming the mid-palate and a lightly floral finish. Zesty and herbal notes of black pepper and blackberry with an intriguing smoky cedar note. In the mouth this carries quite a bit of fruit, with black cherry and blackberry preserves, milk chocolate and cinnamon on the finish. Spicy, earthy and fruity in one refreshing package. Read More
