Colchagua Valley Wine

Colchagua Valley is set close to the Coastal Range and to the sea. It is largely recognized as a traditional wine-growing region and is one of the best-known in Chile. This region offers big red wines, 90% of the region’s plantings, made from Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, and old vine Malbec. Climates in Colchagua vary, ranging from the Andes foothills to the cooler areas of Marchigue and Lolol which are closer to the Pacific Ocean.

There is a large range of soils here from fertile alluvial soils on the valley floor to sand and decomposed granite on the hillsides; in the west, schist, volcanic sands, and slate can also be found. Some of Chile’s top wineries are located in the Colchagua Valley and take great advantage of the hilly terrain to achieve optimum ripeness. Micro-areas such as Apalta, where Lapostelle’s Clos Apalta and Montes’ Alpha ‘M’ can be found, San Fernando, and Chimbarango offer more significant diurnal differences which help to bring out Read more »

Colchagua Valley on Snooth

  • Maquis Viola Colchagua Valley 2010

    Snoothrank:

Deceptively light aromas of red berry, cherry and smoke. This is textured and chunky with firm tannins on the palate, good red fruit character of strawberry and cherry with a pronounced smoke permeating through and ending on a creamy dark chocolate mousse and baking spice. Read More

  • Montes Alpha Carmenere 2013

    Snoothrank:

Lightly savory aromas of fresh cherry and strawberry with bold spice, some floral hints and even a touch of wheatiness. More bold fruit flavors on the palate, rich full bodied and earthy with blackberry, cranberry and red currant fronting for rough tannins and a slightly softer finish of milk chocolate and cream. • Casa Silva Los Lingues Vineyard Carmenere Colchagua Valley 2014

    Snoothrank:

Light and elegant aromas of red currant, cherry and floral blossom notes framed by a hint of baking spice. Fresh berry, cherry and strawberry fruit is well developed and silky textured on the palate, restrained around the edges but with a strong core that drops into a tannic chew towards the finish where the fruit is joined by a touch of cream a... • Apaltagua Envero Gran Reserva 2014

    Snoothrank:

Rich perfume and floral notes of blackberry, clay and savory spice on the nose. Firm, focused and assertive on the palate, this has tart acidity and herbal notes of olive and pepper out front of dark berry and cherry fruit that finishes with a touch of heat, loads of spice and a dark chocolate cream. • Los Vascos Carmenere Grande Reserve Colchagua Valley 2013

    Snoothrank:

Herbal notes of eucalyptus and green pepper in the glass, though plenty of dark cherry and blackberry/raspberry fruit. Similar flavors continue through to the palate, where they are joined by rich spice and generous tannins, more dark blackberry and an increasing intensity of lingering earthiness towards the finish. • Montes Cabernet Sauvignon Alpha 2013

    Snoothrank:

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Montes Alpha is distinctively Chilean (or antipodal) in style, but very French in flavour profile - with perhaps a bit more purity than a Cab dominated Bordeaux A. C. Cedar shank and blackberry dominate the nose and a slightly tart, blackberry entry with oak tannin tends to mark the entry. Finish has some pucker, but... Read More

  • Gran Reserva Serie Riberas Sauvignon Blanc 2015

    Snoothrank:

Chunky papaya, green melon and fresh lime notes on the nose of this fruit forward wine. This is expressive and zesty in the mouth showing good power and length and a mostly citrus palate of lime and grapefruit with a good dose of spice warming the mid-palate and a lightly floral finish.
