Colchagua Valley Wine

Colchagua Valley is set close to the Coastal Range and to the sea. It is largely recognized as a traditional wine-growing region and is one of the best-known in Chile. This region offers big red wines, 90% of the region’s plantings, made from Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, and old vine Malbec. Climates in Colchagua vary, ranging from the Andes foothills to the cooler areas of Marchigue and Lolol which are closer to the Pacific Ocean.

There is a large range of soils here from fertile alluvial soils on the valley floor to sand and decomposed granite on the hillsides; in the west, schist, volcanic sands, and slate can also be found. Some of Chile’s top wineries are located in the Colchagua Valley and take great advantage of the hilly terrain to achieve optimum ripeness. Micro-areas such as Apalta, where Lapostelle’s Clos Apalta and Montes’ Alpha ‘M’ can be found, San Fernando, and Chimbarango offer more significant diurnal differences which help to bring out Read more »

  • Montgras Antu Ninquen Syrah 2009

    Snoothrank:

  • Hacienda Araucano Carmenere Reserva 2011

    Snoothrank:

A little sweet oak greets the nose followed by some dark herbal and African violet aromas all layered over forest berry wild fruits, wild strawberries and blackberries. Rather light bodied and scid driven with just a suggestion of tannin supporting a nice core of blackberry and black currant fruit that shows a little oaky bitterness on the backe... Read More

    Snoothrank:

Damson plums, dried flowers, dried herbs old leather and medicinal tinged aromas of mint and licorice fill the glass along with a touch of VA. Decidedly supple if still bright in the mouth, the tannins have really integrated very well here leaving lots of plummy fruit and coffee and spice toned oak flavors to saturate the palate. This still rema... Read More
