Colchagua Valley Wine

Colchagua Valley is set close to the Coastal Range and to the sea. It is largely recognized as a traditional wine-growing region and is one of the best-known in Chile. This region offers big red wines, 90% of the region’s plantings, made from Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, and old vine Malbec. Climates in Colchagua vary, ranging from the Andes foothills to the cooler areas of Marchigue and Lolol which are closer to the Pacific Ocean.

There is a large range of soils here from fertile alluvial soils on the valley floor to sand and decomposed granite on the hillsides; in the west, schist, volcanic sands, and slate can also be found. Some of Chile’s top wineries are located in the Colchagua Valley and take great advantage of the hilly terrain to achieve optimum ripeness. Micro-areas such as Apalta, where Lapostelle’s Clos Apalta and Montes’ Alpha ‘M’ can be found, San Fernando, and Chimbarango offer more significant diurnal differences which help to bring out Read more »

Colchagua Valley on Snooth

  • Primus the Blend Veramonte Colchagua Valley 2010

    Snoothrank:

Nothing very special, but nothing too bad either, more like something to depend on from a wine list when nothing else seems appropriate for a specific experience...similar to the posted Wine Maker's notes: '...full-bodied; layered with blackberry, cherry, dried plums, and a hint of cocoa...' • Montgras Antu Ninquen Syrah 2012

    Snoothrank:

This is a Chilean wine which I generally buy few of. Picked this up at Costco when they were out of my go to wine. Antu syrah is fruit forward with lots of dark fruit on the nose and palate. It is surprisingly acidic and ends with a nice tannic bite. Nice wine. Read More

  • Quintay Carmenere Clava Reserve 2012

    Snoothrank:

Youthful and quite fruity on the nose with hints of plummy fruit intertwined with some spicy oak and gently vegetal braised greens notes all bound up with sweet scents of caramel. Rich and a touch sweet on entry with soft tannins and integrated acidity supporting a nice ball of rich if somewhat indistinct dark fruit on the palate. The wood is no... Read More

  • Montes Alpha Camenere 2012

    Snoothrank:

Fairly intense aromatically, showing off lots of caramelly toasted oak aromas along with paprika and raw beefy accented red berry fruit topped with some bay leaf and oregano . This is smooth, firm and slightly dense in the mouth. Its filled with polished tannins and is well supported by integrated acidity. The flavors are a bit of a one two punc... Read More

  • Bisquertt la Joya Syrah 2010

    Snoothrank:

Rather intensely aromatic and unusual with rich aromas of soy marinated beef, carob, black cherry am and antiseptic herbal nuance. Big in the mouth, though light on its feet and not terribly extracted. The palate here mimic the nose with carob rich flavors of black cherry and blackberry fruit all wrapped up with hints of dried herbs. Its not wha... Read More
