Maipo Valley Wine

Southwest of Santiago lies the Maipo Valley, arguably the most famous wine producing region in Chile and it is also one of the largest totaling over 10,000 hectares of area under vine. Though the Maipo Valley is not Chile’s oldest wine region, it is often referred to as the most traditional. Due to the areas proximity to Santiago, many of Chile’s oldest, largest, and most established wineries have found a home in the Maipo Valley including Concho y Toro, Cousino Macul, and Santa Rita.

In the Maipo Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon dominates vine plantings – accounting for more than 50% of the wines produced, Merlot accounts for 10%. Overall, the Maipo Valley is a predominately red wine region and has an 85/15 split of red to white wines.

The Maipo Valley covers a large area of Chile spanning from the east of Santiago to the west of the Pacific Ocean. Within this area there are three sections, Alto Maipo, Central Maipo, and Coastal Maipo. Each offers its own, unique style of wine Read more »

  • Cousino Macul Cab Sauv 2012

    Snoothrank:

Interesting Maipo white made from Sauvignon Gris which is a clonal mutation of sauvignon blanc. More of the white stone fruit (not too ripe peach and pear) versus grapefruit or lemon almost Riesling like. Nice acidity, a bit of perfume similar to a roussanne but lighter. Read More

  • Penalolen Sauvignon Blanc. Clos Quebrada de Macul 2013

    Snoothrank:

Intense aromas of green herbs, jalapeno, gooseberries and pineapple greet the nose. This has a lot of trapped CO2 so it comes off as a little sparkling at first, which is not at all attractive on a hot day with a well chilled bottle. The fruit here shows nice detail recalling the pineapple and lime from the nose with a touch of mango thrown in a... Read More

  • Cousiño-Macul Riesling Doña Isidora 2011

    Snoothrank:

Butter, vanilla, fennel seed, toasty oak spice, baked apple and lemon curd all come together on this rather classic nose. Fairly restrained on entry, this shows some butteriness on the palate along with simple if clear flavors of apple and lots of mango. The toasty spice kicks in on the backend with a strong vein of vanilla driving the moderatel... Read More
