Valle Central, or Central Valley, is a large expanse of Chile that is one of the most significant wine producing regions in South America. It starts with the Maipo Valley around Santiago, all the way to the Maule Valley. There are many different types of terroirs and microclimates within it, as well as styles of viticulture from old school to modern.

Valle Central is divided into four subregions, from north to south (and warmest to coolest):
*Maipo, the country’s most historic region, planted since the 16th century and home to the country’s oldest existing wineries. Closest to the capital Santiago.
*Rapel Valley, home to the famous Colchagua and Cachapoal subregions.
*Curico Valley, pioneered in the 1970s by Miguel Torres and his disciples of modern viticulture.
*Maule Valley, one of the most prolific wine-producing regions in all of South America.

Most wines labeled as Central Valley or Valle Central can come from anywhere within these subregions Read more »

  • Santa Rita Cabernet Sauvignon Medalla Real Gran Reserva 2010

    Snoothrank:

Had this with lunch at Marcello's Chophouse the other day. Beautiful little number, strong and dense Cabernet, but loads of herb and spice. Long lingering and rich finish of stewed fruit and spice...underpriced for this quality. Read More

Very good. Red peppers and cherry. Not as much spicy black pepper as I was expecting. Read More

  • Casas Patronales Syrah Reserva 2011

    Snoothrank:

Good value like most of their wines. Needs some time to breathe. Bone dry but nice medium bodied hearty rustic red with earthy, leathery, and hints of the darkest fruits. 86 / 100 , also interesting to note I have drank 4 bottles and actually have noticed slight variation the previous one was somehow better than the current one. ?? Nothing fantastic, but a step upwards from some of the others I have had while dining out...Here is a review I found that says it better than I can, though I think it drinking well now...'The Wine Advocate - "The flagship 2006 Albis is a ... • Rios de Chile Carmenere Central Valley Chile 2011

    Snoothrank:

Beef and gently vegetal on the nose this reminds me of beef stew on the nose with soft shadings of wild berry fruit and wild mushrooms adding detail. Soft and a bit fat in the mouth, theres a nice bed of savoriness covered by the dense and slightly chewy fruit here. Toasty accents and dark fruit saturate the palate with modest tannins and incons... Read More

  • Korta Carmenere Barrel Selection Reserve Lontue Valley Chile 2010

    Snoothrank:

A bit of mushroom on the nose shows the evolution here but this does offer up a fairly complex array of toasted oak, tarry, and gently spice aromas that include hints of green fennel seeds and black cherry and currant fruit. Smooth and polished in the mouth, this retain quite robust black cherry and black currant fruit on the palate with a rich ... Read More
