Valle Central, or Central Valley, is a large expanse of Chile that is one of the most significant wine producing regions in South America. It starts with the Maipo Valley around Santiago, all the way to the Maule Valley. There are many different types of terroirs and microclimates within it, as well as styles of viticulture from old school to modern.

Valle Central is divided into four subregions, from north to south (and warmest to coolest):
*Maipo, the country’s most historic region, planted since the 16th century and home to the country’s oldest existing wineries. Closest to the capital Santiago.
*Rapel Valley, home to the famous Colchagua and Cachapoal subregions.
*Curico Valley, pioneered in the 1970s by Miguel Torres and his disciples of modern viticulture.
*Maule Valley, one of the most prolific wine-producing regions in all of South America.

Most wines labeled as Central Valley or Valle Central can come from anywhere within these subregions Read more »

  • Casas Patronales Syrah Reserva 2011

    Snoothrank:

Good value like most of their wines. Needs some time to breathe. Bone dry but nice medium bodied hearty rustic red with earthy, leathery, and hints of the darkest fruits. 86 / 100 , also interesting to note I have drank 4 bottles and actually have noticed slight variation the previous one was somehow better than the current one. ?? • Of course the headline in the paper was flooding will not end drought. I know ... in the Summer and Fall. The Central Valley is a desert. Diverting water there to make it farmland has more to do with our drought than how much rainfall we get or don't get. But I digress. What really surprises me are the number of homes along the river that have... Read More

  • Casa Lapostolle Clos Apalta Red 97js Premier 2010

    Snoothrank:

I liked this one quite a bit although apparently Lapostolle is not known as a Cabernet Sauvignon winery. It is not too deep but tasty without a lot of bitterness. The flavor doesn't last particularly long but it is quite nice with a dinner or for sipping. It's not particularly hearty and benefited from some time sitting out. I would purchase it... Read More
