Valle Central, or Central Valley, is a large expanse of Chile that is one of the most significant wine producing regions in South America. It starts with the Maipo Valley around Santiago, all the way to the Maule Valley. There are many different types of terroirs and microclimates within it, as well as styles of viticulture from old school to modern.

Valle Central is divided into four subregions, from north to south (and warmest to coolest):
*Maipo, the country’s most historic region, planted since the 16th century and home to the country’s oldest existing wineries. Closest to the capital Santiago.
*Rapel Valley, home to the famous Colchagua and Cachapoal subregions.
*Curico Valley, pioneered in the 1970s by Miguel Torres and his disciples of modern viticulture.
*Maule Valley, one of the most prolific wine-producing regions in all of South America.

Most wines labeled as Central Valley or Valle Central can come from anywhere within these subregions Read more »

Central Valley on Snooth

  • Thanks, Ogre, for that listing. Pyramid Valley pinots were what first put Central Otago on the map for me. Shocked me full awake, first tasting. Cloudy Bay SBs, on the other hand, make me gag. I remember back in about 1992 I thought they were the cat's meow for something out of a heretofore unknown, nascent wine region. But they just kept gettin... Read More

  • Cousino Macul Cab Sauv 2012

    Snoothrank:

Interesting Maipo white made from Sauvignon Gris which is a clonal mutation of sauvignon blanc. More of the white stone fruit (not too ripe peach and pear) versus grapefruit or lemon almost Riesling like. Nice acidity, a bit of perfume similar to a roussanne but lighter. Read More

  • Hi everyone.  My wife Sandra and I have been into wine for the past few years and that's led to a few trips to Napa Valley and related areas in 2012 and 2013.  We enjoy all wines but reds are our favorites.  We hosted our first wine tasting party last night and it was a fun event - sixteen wine lovers trying different wines in a blind tasting.  ... • Penalolen Sauvignon Blanc. Clos Quebrada de Macul 2013

    Snoothrank:

Intense aromas of green herbs, jalapeno, gooseberries and pineapple greet the nose. This has a lot of trapped CO2 so it comes off as a little sparkling at first, which is not at all attractive on a hot day with a well chilled bottle. The fruit here shows nice detail recalling the pineapple and lime from the nose with a touch of mango thrown in a... Read More

  • Apaltagua Reserva Malbec 2012

    Snoothrank:

Fruity and spicy on the nose with plenty of nuanced nutty, nutmeg tinged oak layered in with blackberry, plum, and black cherry fruit. fruit forward, exuberant and bright in the mouth, this is supported by nicely judged, firm, little tannins and integrated acids that help to show off the spicy character of the fruit here. Rich yet remaining ad... Read More
