Central Valley Wine

Valle Central, or Central Valley, is a large expanse of Chile that is one of the most significant wine producing regions in South America. It starts with the Maipo Valley around Santiago, all the way to the Maule Valley. There are many different types of terroirs and microclimates within it, as well as styles of viticulture from old school to modern.
Valle Central is divided into four subregions, from north to south (and warmest to coolest):
*Maipo, the country’s most historic region, planted since the 16th century and home to the country’s oldest existing wineries. Closest to the capital Santiago.
*Rapel Valley, home to the famous Colchagua and Cachapoal subregions.
*Curico Valley, pioneered in the 1970s by Miguel Torres and his disciples of modern viticulture.
*Maule Valley, one of the most prolific wine-producing regions in all of South America.
Most wines labeled as Central Valley or Valle Central can come from anywhere within these subregions Read more »

  • Viña Santa Rita Syrah 120 Special Selection 2006

Full body, great complexity and structure of flavors. Very intense flavor because the strong sweetness is tamed by even stronger tannins. Dark fruit nose and bouquet; Cherry, dark berries, plum taste; mint finish. Personal favorite of sub $20 cab. Read More

  • Ventisquero Pinot Noir Reserva 2008

Received this pinot as a gift, have never had a Chilean pinot before, but like some of their whites. Typical pinot translucency in the glass is always a great start. Initial nose was a little funky and earthy, but some bright cherries shined through. A few swirls in my mouth showed some tart cherries up front, some soil, and a touch of gamine... Read More

  • As I had mentioned a while back I am making some wine this year and this means for a short period of time I need to be in Sonoma a lot. I need to be there to see what is going on, do punch downs and take readings on the wine. Harvest is a busy time but if you are only doing work on one ton of grapes there isnt a lot to do. This means I find m... Read More

  • Tenta Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon Central Valley 2008

This one has a sweet nose - a cross between cherry coke and a handful of berries. Very dry and not a lot of heavy fruit coming through on the tasting, that I would associate with a young new world. Also lacking that pepperiness that I like in a cab sauv. Not a disaster but not great either. Read More

  • Viña Chocalán Red Blend Gran Reserva 2006

This eclectic blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carminère, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot - dominated in flavor profile by the first two varietals - is a deep, dark, opaque beauty in the glass. The nose has an intense resinous, medicinal, and muted bramble-berry scent with more than a whiff of wood. The entry is slightly warm, with soft, lay... Read More
