Aconcagua Wine

To the north of Santiago is the Aconcagua Valley, a small winegrowing area of just 1,098 hectares best-known for its production of red wines. In fact, Aconcagua has earned international prestige as one of Chile’s highest regarded wines. In 2004, Vina Errázuriz’s “Seña”, an iconic Bordeaux-style blend and one of the premier reds of Chile, placed ahead of both Château Lafite and Château Margaux in the Berlin Tasting, a milestone for the Chilean wine industry likened to the famous 1976 Judgment of Paris.

Aconcagua experiences a Mediterranean climate with 8.5 inches of annual rainfall and boast variety of soils dominated by clay and sand in the east and granite and clay in the west. The area is also home to the America’s highest point, Mt. Aconcagua. At 22,828 feet, the snowcapped mountain provides adequate water to the vines below.

The valley also runs along the river that stretches from the Pacific Ocean to the Andes and experiences significant Read more »

  • Porta "Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva" Aconcagua Valley 2010

The wine is dark ruby and opaque at the core, showing ripeness of the fruit.  The nose exhibits leather, dark cherries, and chocolate.  On the palate, there is more chocolate, dark cherries, and pepper.  Although it seemed a bit hot, the wine had a long, attractive finish and good tannic structure. • Viña Caliterra Chardonnay Reserva 2009

An OK to pretty good Chardonnay. A slight sour finish prevents me from rating this a 4 out of 5. The start is slightly buttery with a touch of spring floral and apples. However the slight sour bite at the end prevents it from truly shining. I also gave this vintage a few tries and bought each bottle from a different store to see if it was a bad ... Read More

  • Viña Casablanca Nimbus Estate Syrah 2009

Lots of mulberry and melted licorice greets the nose along with complicating notes of truffle, black currant, minty herbs and a hint of cracked pepper all layered over a dark, oily oak base. Smooth and fairly focused on entry if a little soft, theres a fair amount of fine tannin here all wrapped up slightly funky, truffly black fruit. The oak is... Read More
