Aconcagua Wine

To the north of Santiago is the Aconcagua Valley, a small winegrowing area of just 1,098 hectares best-known for its production of red wines. In fact, Aconcagua has earned international prestige as one of Chile’s highest regarded wines. In 2004, Vina Errázuriz’s “Seña”, an iconic Bordeaux-style blend and one of the premier reds of Chile, placed ahead of both Château Lafite and Château Margaux in the Berlin Tasting, a milestone for the Chilean wine industry likened to the famous 1976 Judgment of Paris.

Aconcagua experiences a Mediterranean climate with 8.5 inches of annual rainfall and boast variety of soils dominated by clay and sand in the east and granite and clay in the west. The area is also home to the America’s highest point, Mt. Aconcagua. At 22,828 feet, the snowcapped mountain provides adequate water to the vines below.

The valley also runs along the river that stretches from the Pacific Ocean to the Andes and experiences significant Read more »

Aconcagua on Snooth

  • Errazuriz Chardonnay Wild Ferment 2011

    Snoothrank:

This Casablanca Valley Chardonnay was hard to resist - being of good provenance and marketed at a good price point. The nose has a strong citrus (grapefruit) notes with a hint of quince. On entry, there is anise, more grapefruit and cake spice; finish is warm and long. Typical of the region but more interesting. 88 points. Read More

  • Vina Leyda Chardonnay 2013

    Snoothrank:

Classic Chardonnay on the nose with well judged oak adding vanilla and spice note to the core of pineapple and citrus fruits that pick up a touch of mango with air. A leading edge of creamy richness quickly gives way to tart acids that drive the green apple, pineapple, and lime flavors across the palate. This has some heft to it but the great ac... Read More

  • Apaltagua Chardonnay Unoaked Reserva Casablanca Valley Chile 2013

    Snoothrank:

Almost gingery on the nose with real richness of ripe fruit all spicy apple, poached pear and grilled pineapple laced. This smells terrific and has some of the character of oaked Chardonnay coming from some of the creamy, leesy notes. Rich in the mouth, polished and round with bright, well integrated acidity lending the flavors, which verge on o... Read More

  • Veramonte Sauvignon Blanc 2013

    Snoothrank:

For fans of Sauvignon Blanc, this is a competent all-arounder. Good acidity, with some hints of fruit and minerals. For me, it had a relatively dry, light, and crisp finish. It's hard to beat for what you spend. Read More

  • Root 1 Sauvignon Blanc 2013

    Snoothrank:

Sweet peach, lemon verbena and asparagus greet the nose. Made in a fairly tart and lean style, this kicks off with a bright jab of acid that is quickly covered by the core of moderately rich and round fruit. Not particularly complex, this reveals subtle green citrus, grapefruit, and under-ripe melon flavors on the palate that lead to a pithy, r... Read More
