Niagara Peninsula Vqa Wine

The Niagara Peninsula, part of the Ontario province, is the most productive wine region in Canada. Lake Ontario is to its north, and the Niagara River is in the east, culminating at the great Niagara Falls. Most of the vineyards are situated along the Niagara Escarpment, a low mountain ridge that runs through Ontario into New York state. The Escarpment acts as a climate moderator, protecting against cold lake breezes by circulating air back to the lake. This is especially helpful to low lying areas that would normally be prone to early frost. The region has its own microclimate that differs from the rest of Canada, with good grape ripening conditions in hot summers and cold late autumns and winters that allow for natural Icewine production.
Icewine, produced mostly from the Vidal grape, but also from Riesling, is the pride of the region and its most popular commodity, even in a sparkling version. As in Germany, Riesling is produced here in a range of styles from bone dry to Read more »

  • Malivoire Chardonnay Niagara Peninsula Vqa Estate Bottled 2004

Stemming from a blend of half barrel-aged and half unoaked Chardonnay, the 2004 vintage from Malivoire provided an interesting cross-section of characteristics. It showed, on one hand, subtle buttery, toasty, almond tones with banana fruit from the oaked portions, and a fresh citrus bloom of oranges and limes on the nose. The palate continues th... • Malivoire Cabernet Franc Rose "Ladybug 2004

The wine was a perfect match for dinner, bringing strawberries, rhubarb, and cranberry to the table. The curious sweet and sour quality of cranberries carried over onto the palate, accentuated by good acidity and a tangy finish. With excellent length this medium-bodied pink was a very well structured rosé, with none of the over-sweetened flab th... Read More

  • Mike Weir Estate Winery Chardonnay Niagara Peninsula Vqa 2005

Rich in colour and taste, this wine is perfectly crafted for palates who adore the classic toasty, buttery Chardonnay taste, with enough crisp acidity to cater to those who dislike overdone Chards. Although lacking its own unique character, this charmingly impressionable wine is easy drinking on its own or a great accompaniment to food. Its the ... Read More

  • Angels Gate Winery Cabernet Franc Beamsville Bench Vqa Icewine 2004

The familiar tea leaf aroma, stronger in this wine than any others we had tried up until that point, was still discernable on the nose, along with smoke, roasted red peppers, ash, and strawberry jam. Light to medium bodied, the palate featured berry notes, pepper and an acidic, slightly bitter finish. Decent length and food friendly overtones st... Read More

  • Henry of Pelham Pinot Blanc 2004

Dry, acidic, and lemon-water pale, Henry of Pelhams 2004 vintage is a firm, almost bracing expression of Pinot Blanc. A prime example of more than meets the nose, expect a bit of a surprise on the palate. A soft nose of peach, floral notes, and apple makes mischief by belying a sharper palate of lime, mineral, and green apple characteristics. Wh... Read More

  • Fielding Estate Winery Gewürztraminer Niagara Peninsula Vqa 2006

Soft and seemingly shy at first, this Gewurz builds on all of the characteristics that fans of the varietal love, while tossing in enough accompanying uniqueness to excite even those generally leery of this highly aromatic little grape. The classic identifiers of rose petals and lychee are most assuredly present on both nose and palate, but dont... Read More

  • Coyote's Run Estate Winery Red Bordeaux Blend Four Mile Creek Vqa Meritage 2004

Gold medal winner at the Canadian Wine Awards. A very Burgundian style Pinot. Good, earthy, barnyard style. A firm, full bodied wine. Personally I prefer the fruitier Red Paw wine. Read More
