Niagara Peninsula Wine

The Niagara Peninsula, part of the Ontario province, is the most productive wine region in Canada. Lake Ontario is to its north, and the Niagara River is in the east, culminating at the great Niagara Falls. Most of the vineyards are situated along the Niagara Escarpment, a low mountain ridge that runs through Ontario into New York state. The Escarpment acts as a climate moderator, protecting against cold lake breezes by circulating air back to the lake. This is especially helpful to low lying areas that would normally be prone to early frost. The region has its own microclimate that differs from the rest of Canada, with good grape ripening conditions in hot summers and cold late autumns and winters that allow for natural Icewine production.
Icewine, produced mostly from the Vidal grape, but also from Riesling, is the pride of the region and its most popular commodity, even in a sparkling version. As in Germany, Riesling is produced here in a range of styles from bone dry to Read more »

  • Inniskillin Riesling Late Autumn 2009

Pale straw colour. Fragrant melon and rosebud. A nice delicate late Riesling. Leaning slightly more tart than sweet, but just by a tad. Starts sweet on the palette tending to a tart finish. Good value! Read More

  • Tawse Quarry Road Pinot Noir 2009

One of many great Niagara '09 Pinots. Dark cherry, mocha and soil on the nose. More cherry, dark fruits and mocha on the palate. Very full body with a nice long finish. The full flavors come out after a few hours of decanting. Read More

  • Tawse Estates Riesling Sketches of Niagara 2007

A nice mid-dry Riesling with fruity citrus but enough mineralness to keep it dry and from being overly sweet. I've enjoyed a few bottles. Read More

  • The Foreign Affair Winery Cabernet Franc Appassimento 2007

Had a sample at the winery and had to have it, despite the pricetag. An amazing wine done in the "Amarone" Appassimento style of drying the grapes. Trying to save it for special occasion but it might not make it. Read More

  • Peller Family Estates Ice Cuvee Rose Sparkling Wine

It is a pretty salmon pink in the glass; not too sweet and soft with gentle sparkle. Summer berries, light peach, and currant flavours: it is a tasty pre-dinner treat. Read More

  • Beamsville Bench Chardonnay Vqa 2008

It looks like a lemon tart and smells a bit buttery. The first sip is a citrusy splash with a touch of caramel and spice. Perfect for an over-cast warm day. Read More

  • Tawse Estates Riesling 2010

This Ontario offering has wonderful acidity - bracing and full of apple, pear and nectarine. The wine is all Canadian - none of the smooth unction of an over-worked and under-alcoholic Mosel, but imbued with bubbly excitement and New World verve. An excellent wine from an very good producer.
