Niagara Peninsula Wine

The Niagara Peninsula, part of the Ontario province, is the most productive wine region in Canada. Lake Ontario is to its north, and the Niagara River is in the east, culminating at the great Niagara Falls. Most of the vineyards are situated along the Niagara Escarpment, a low mountain ridge that runs through Ontario into New York state. The Escarpment acts as a climate moderator, protecting against cold lake breezes by circulating air back to the lake. This is especially helpful to low lying areas that would normally be prone to early frost. The region has its own microclimate that differs from the rest of Canada, with good grape ripening conditions in hot summers and cold late autumns and winters that allow for natural Icewine production.
Icewine, produced mostly from the Vidal grape, but also from Riesling, is the pride of the region and its most popular commodity, even in a sparkling version. As in Germany, Riesling is produced here in a range of styles from bone dry to Read more »

  • Equifera Vidal Icewine 2008

A subpar wine. The scent is unappetizing and the taste is light and flabby. Well past its shelf life at this point. Read More

  • Inniskillin Pearl Vidal Riesling Icewine 2006

Read More

  • Calamus Estate Vqa Calamus Red 2010

A nose of oak and raspberry jam with some heat. A dry red mix that shows the cab sauv fullness with a smooth merlot finish. A deep undertone of blackcurrant on the palate. Could still be left to age for another year or two to let the tannins temper a bit. A rewarding experience. Read More

  • Inniskillin Riesling Late Autumn 2009

Pale straw colour. Fragrant melon and rosebud. A nice delicate late Riesling. Leaning slightly more tart than sweet, but just by a tad. Starts sweet on the palette tending to a tart finish. Good value! Read More

  • Tawse Quarry Road Pinot Noir 2009

One of many great Niagara '09 Pinots. Dark cherry, mocha and soil on the nose. More cherry, dark fruits and mocha on the palate. Very full body with a nice long finish. The full flavors come out after a few hours of decanting. Read More

  • Tawse Estates Riesling Sketches of Niagara 2007

A nice mid-dry Riesling with fruity citrus but enough mineralness to keep it dry and from being overly sweet. I've enjoyed a few bottles. Read More

  • The Foreign Affair Winery Cabernet Franc Appassimento 2007

Had a sample at the winery and had to have it, despite the pricetag. An amazing wine done in the "Amarone" Appassimento style of drying the grapes. Trying to save it for special occasion but it might not make it. Read More
