Niagara Peninsula Wine

The Niagara Peninsula, part of the Ontario province, is the most productive wine region in Canada. Lake Ontario is to its north, and the Niagara River is in the east, culminating at the great Niagara Falls. Most of the vineyards are situated along the Niagara Escarpment, a low mountain ridge that runs through Ontario into New York state. The Escarpment acts as a climate moderator, protecting against cold lake breezes by circulating air back to the lake. This is especially helpful to low lying areas that would normally be prone to early frost. The region has its own microclimate that differs from the rest of Canada, with good grape ripening conditions in hot summers and cold late autumns and winters that allow for natural Icewine production.

Icewine, produced mostly from the Vidal grape, but also from Riesling, is the pride of the region and its most popular commodity, even in a sparkling version. As in Germany, Riesling is produced here in a range of styles from bone dry to Read more »

Niagara Peninsula on Snooth

  • Malivoire Gewürztraminer Beamsville Bench Vqa Estate Bottled 2010

    Snoothrank:

After a few glasses this fragrant Gewurzt remains an enigma. A clear nose of spiced apple pie and apricot accent this yellow-ish wine. A sweet palate that is unlike any Gewurtz Ive tasted from Ontario. A very edgeless and rounded mouthful that ends with a slight dryness on the finish. New World Gewurtz are often criticised for being overly flab... Read More

  • Kacaba Rebecca Rose 2011

    Snoothrank:

This delicious rose exhibits a tremendous nose of strawberries with hints of spice and a very well balanced and refreshing palate of strawberries, pink grapefruit and orange blossoms. This is the best rose I've come across in Ontario to date. The rose is produced in a unique fashion that creates a very versatile wine that goes well beyond the su... Read More

  • Reif Estate Kerner Niagara-On-the-Lake Vqa 2009

    Snoothrank:

Perhaps this wine's most striking feature is its intense floral aromas. A fresh velvet mouthful to start followed by a ceiling of tempered acidity. Flavours of peach, starfruit and blood oranges with a nice finish. Read More

  • Konzelmann Pinot Blanc-Weissburgunder 2010

    Snoothrank:

Ah Pinot Blanc! All too rare and unassuming. It is said that Pinot Blanc is the party wine. In some respects that is true, since it can be seen as a safe white bet for the occasional wine drinker. Nevertheless, I appreciate that Konzelmann has taken on Pinot Blanc and succeeded in creating a rather fun and lengthy wine. This white wine is full ... Read More
