Niagara Peninsula Wine

The Niagara Peninsula, part of the Ontario province, is the most productive wine region in Canada. Lake Ontario is to its north, and the Niagara River is in the east, culminating at the great Niagara Falls. Most of the vineyards are situated along the Niagara Escarpment, a low mountain ridge that runs through Ontario into New York state. The Escarpment acts as a climate moderator, protecting against cold lake breezes by circulating air back to the lake. This is especially helpful to low lying areas that would normally be prone to early frost. The region has its own microclimate that differs from the rest of Canada, with good grape ripening conditions in hot summers and cold late autumns and winters that allow for natural Icewine production.
Icewine, produced mostly from the Vidal grape, but also from Riesling, is the pride of the region and its most popular commodity, even in a sparkling version. As in Germany, Riesling is produced here in a range of styles from bone dry to Read more »

  • Henry of Pelham Baco Noir Old Vines 2014

The acidic, wild berry aroma and flavour of this well-made Baco Noir will appeal to old-style drinkers of Ontario wines; to wit, the wine is bright, filled with cranberry tartness and finishes short. It is a pocket of history in a bottle and worth drinking - especially if you are eating seafood or light entrees. Worth trying. 85 points. Read More

  • Stratus Charles Baker Riesling 2011

Stewed white fruit - especially gooseberry - dominates the nose with some incipient petrol. On the palate (especially entry), there is MacIntosh apple acidity and lime. Truly delicious, this wine lacks almost for nothing - maybe just a bit more density. Otherwise, seek out and buy as much as you can find. Few Rhinegau beat this baby... one of C... Read More

  • Baco Noir Henry of Pelham Niagara Ontario 2005

This is both an excellent drinking wine and it also has a hidden secret. I have not run across a better wine for making meat sauces or gravies. It has a certain earthiness in keeping with the 'baco' aspect of its name. Red meats, grilled or roasted, fit perfectly with it. Read More
