Ontario Wine

Ontario is the most productive wine-producing province within Canada, accounting for the majority of its wines. Though it is located in the middle of the world’s “wine belt,” at 41 - 44 degrees N (the same as Tuscany, Burgundy, and Oregon), the climate is a bit cooler. But it is still very well suited to grape-growing. Four of the Great Lakes (Ontario, Erie, Huron, and Superior) are in Ontario, as well dozens of freshwater lakes, providing plenty of irrigation. Most of the vineyards are situated in the south, parallelling the US border, along the shorelines of Lakes Erie and Ontario, where it is most warm. The soils are a combination of glacial sediment and clay-loam.

The Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA) of Ontario regulates the labeling and quality of the wines. For a single varietal to be declared on a label, the wine must be 85% of that varietal. Labrusca varietals had been the norm for grape plantings, as in most of Canada, due to their hardiness in cold Read more »

Ontario on Snooth

  • Baco Noir Henry of Pelham Niagara Ontario 2005

    Snoothrank:

This is both an excellent drinking wine and it also has a hidden secret. I have not run across a better wine for making meat sauces or gravies. It has a certain earthiness in keeping with the 'baco' aspect of its name. Red meats, grilled or roasted, fit perfectly with it. Read More

  • Thirty Bench Wines Thirty Bench Riesling Blanc NV

    Snoothrank:

aint yellow in the class with a slight orange cast, this wine smells of plum, fresh peach and lime. In the mouth, the wine is incredibly juicy and delicious mouthwatering acidity and a strong mineral character as body. Highly recommended to pizz and pasta as perfect match in a hot summer. • No, for sure there is some good wine coming out of Ontario, as well as in BC. Local wine keeps surprising me, actually. Earlier this year we visited Saturna Island Winery, and I was super impressed by their wild ferment riesling (they had two rieslings as I recall). Those guys are off Vancouver Island, well away from the Okanagan and Naramarta B... Read More

  • The Old Third Vineyard Pinot Noir Prince Edward County Vqa 2010

    Snoothrank:

This wine has been allowed to age three years since I bought it at the winery. It could age longer. I used a Vinturi aerator to open it up a bit more. Without the Vinturi it was too acidic. Velvety red in colour. Raspberry, currant, and something like pecan on the nose. High in tannins and quite acidic. Another year would make this more full. I ... Read More
