Ontario Wine

Ontario is the most productive wine-producing province within Canada, accounting for the majority of its wines. Though it is located in the middle of the world’s “wine belt,” at 41 - 44 degrees N (the same as Tuscany, Burgundy, and Oregon), the climate is a bit cooler. But it is still very well suited to grape-growing. Four of the Great Lakes (Ontario, Erie, Huron, and Superior) are in Ontario, as well dozens of freshwater lakes, providing plenty of irrigation. Most of the vineyards are situated in the south, parallelling the US border, along the shorelines of Lakes Erie and Ontario, where it is most warm. The soils are a combination of glacial sediment and clay-loam.

The Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA) of Ontario regulates the labeling and quality of the wines. For a single varietal to be declared on a label, the wine must be 85% of that varietal. Labrusca varietals had been the norm for grape plantings, as in most of Canada, due to their hardiness in cold Read more »

  • Equifera Vidal Icewine 2008

    Snoothrank:

A subpar wine. The scent is unappetizing and the taste is light and flabby. Well past its shelf life at this point. Read More

  • Inniskillin Pearl Vidal Riesling Icewine 2006

    Snoothrank:

Read More

When I began to pour the contents of this bottle into my wine glass, I was quite suprised to see the wine begin to "fizz".I quickly looked at the label again, just to be sure I didn't purchase a sparkling red wine! The wine indeed is a red wine, the start has a crisp spritzy feel on your taste buds, followed by a strong concord middle, and a smoo... • Featherstone Sauvignon Blanc Estate Bottled 2011

    Snoothrank:

A light greenish tinged wine. An aromatic bouquet of citrus fruits, lime, green apple with hints of golden delicious and pineapple. A clean soft light-bodied wine with mild tartness. Subtle notes of citrus round out this refreshing mouthful. Young, lively and easily enjoyed. A nice white without any pretensions. Read More

  • Calamus Estate Vqa Calamus Red 2010

    Snoothrank:

A nose of oak and raspberry jam with some heat. A dry red mix that shows the cab sauv fullness with a smooth merlot finish. A deep undertone of blackcurrant on the palate. Could still be left to age for another year or two to let the tannins temper a bit. A rewarding experience. Read More

  • Inniskillin Riesling Late Autumn 2009

Pale straw colour. Fragrant melon and rosebud. A nice delicate late Riesling. Leaning slightly more tart than sweet, but just by a tad. Starts sweet on the palette tending to a tart finish. Good value! Read More

  • Tawse Quarry Road Pinot Noir 2009

    Snoothrank:

One of many great Niagara '09 Pinots. Dark cherry, mocha and soil on the nose. More cherry, dark fruits and mocha on the palate. Very full body with a nice long finish. The full flavors come out after a few hours of decanting. Read More
