Okanagan Valley Wine

The Okanagan Valley is the most productive viticultural area of British Columbia in Canada. Once Canada was settled in the early 1800s, much of the country resigned itself to growing labrusca varietals such as Baco Noir, Concord and Seyval Blanc, which were resilient to the extremes in weather, but not so instantly endearing to the palate. However, many wine-makers in the Okanagan Valley, some of which has a comparably warmer, drier climate, persisted with vinifera vines until they found those most suitable to the growing conditions. In the mid-20th century, once modern techniques came into practice, most labrusca was pulled in favor of the more marketable vinifera

The Okanagan Valley has an array of microclimates and soil types. The area to the south in the Osoyoos subregion is considerably warm and arid, with dessert-like conditions in some areas and low rainfall. To the north in Kelowna, it’s much cooler and wetter. The south is sandy and rocky while the north is a Read more »

Okanagan Valley on Snooth

  • Platinum Bench Estate Winery Gamay Noir 2012

    Snoothrank:

This Gamay from the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia Canada is very deep in color... a product of good local growing conditions in 2012. A beautiful raspberry nose... like a northern Beaujolais Cru.. with a hint of white icing sugar. A touch sweet on entry, with very prominent ripe raspberry. Dense, a little one-dimensional (not complex) i... Read More

  • Moon Curser Afraid of the Dark 2012

    Snoothrank:

This wonderful white wine with the year-round Halloween motif for a label evokes the northern Rhone with a scent of pineapple, lychee, peach and tisane (herb tea). The entry is viscous, oily, slightly sweet with white pepper and herbal notes on the palate. Finishes quite long. A truly fine, well balanced Okanagan wine with a European touch. 8... Read More

  • Volcanic Hills Single Vineyard Gewurztraminer 2012

    Snoothrank:

Another great member of the Volcanic Hills line-up; this time an off-dry white packed with white fruit and spice on the nose and a delicious, full, juicy, round, grapefruit, peach, kiwi, gooseberry melange on the palate. Mouth-feel is full but balanced. As good as it gets from this great vintage. 90 points. Read More

  • Volcanic Hills Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

    Snoothrank:

Re-tasting the line-up of this Kelowna BC winery led to the discovery of the wine in question; good, dark color and a rich, inviting blackberry pie and spice nose which progresses to a nice grip (silky tannin), blackberry, cedar wood, dark chocolate and plum on the palate; overall definition and balance is excellent with good finesse. Very well... Read More

  • La Frenz Naramata Bench Viognier Probyn-Eastman Vineyard 2012

    Snoothrank:

With a wonderfully nuanced nose dominated by mandarin orange, kiwi, and lychee nut, this 2012 Viognier has distinctly correct fruit; on the palate, the juice is sweet but not cloying with just the right acid balance. Finish is medium with a touch of citrus rind. Very juicy and more tropical in flavour than Condrieu. Best Viognier so far from ... Read More

  • House of Rose Old Vines Marechal Foch 2010

    Snoothrank:

This maréchal Foch (Kuhlmann 188) is a holdover from an earlier day when French Hybrids ruled the day in Canada and New York State. However, this wine is a serious effort - inky and tooth-blackening with echos of sloes, plums, day-old coffee grinds on the palate with some acerbic notes on the typically short finish. A good example of the grape.... Read More

  • Stoneboat Vineyards Chorus 2012

    Snoothrank:

This year's edition of the popular white blend "Chorus" has a rich nose of garden flowers, peach and orange marmalade; on entry there is a richer, more unctuous mouth feel with almond bitterness on the finish. Not as refreshing as the more dilute 2011 but there is more punch and some elegance. Should please most palates. 86 points. Read More

  • Summerhill Pyramid Winery Gewurztraminer 2012

    Snoothrank:

Winemaker Eric von Krosigk - in keeping with his roots and training, has produced a very German expression of Gewürztraminer; on the nose the usual spice from warmer climates is absent, but there are coy notes of canned lychee nut , pear and gooseberry. On the palate there is some icing sugar, though just a tad, and a creamy. unctuous, preserved... Read More
