British Columbia Wine

British Columbia in the western part of Canada has come a long way from its humble beginnings as a wine region. European settlers in the 1800s attempted to work with vinifera plantings, but the grapes could not withstand the extremes in temperature, succombing to diseases and fungus in the summer and freezing to death in the winter. Labrusca varietals such as Vidal Blanc, Baco Noir, and Concord were able to withstand the environment, but the wines were pretty “funky,” to say the least, and never had much success outside of Canada.

In the 1960s and 70s, with a consumer shift toward higher quality wines and the invention of modern viticultural technologies and techniques, wine-makers in British Columbia were able to step up their game and work with more popular vinifera grapes. The British Columbia Wine Institute (BC VQA) was founded in 1990 to control viticultural qualilty and promote local wines. The label VQA ensures 100% of growth and production takes place in British Read more »

British Columbia on Snooth

  • Church and State Wines Coyote Bowl Series Chardonnay 2012

    Snoothrank:

The nose of this wine is a,an intriguing vanilla, filbert and spiced apple - appropriate for the season. On the palate, there is a soft vanilla (oak), slightly tart apple and ginger flavour bundle. The finish is warm and the warmth lingers - along with soft, spicy tannin. Elegant but slightly heady. Good value. 89 points. Tasted at Kensingt... Read More

  • Saskatchewan, British Columbia?  I do not have many links to Canada, and the ones that I do have are pretty remote, but that doesn't sound right.  There's a city in British Columbia named Saskatchewan?  There very well may be. For all I know there may be a Colorado in California. Did anybody besides me have a problem with Snooth yesterday?  Star... Read More

  • La Frenz Naramata Bench Chardonnay Reserve 2012

    Snoothrank:

The talented Jeff Martin makes this delicious Chard in a (rather) Cali style - with prominent oak (but not too, too prominent), a sweet entry with ample vanilla, butterscotch, apple and tropical fruit such as mango. This is a fine wine for the price, the only distraction being the gentle northern Chardonnay being a teeny bit overpowered by the ... Read More

  • Township 7 Cabernet Sauvignon Blue Terrace Vineyard 2010

    Snoothrank:

This 2010 entry from Township 7 (originally headquartered at Langley BC Canada - but with vineyards in Naramata) is a nice, medium-bodied, sound Cab with a hint of acidity, precipitated tannin, coffee and tasty blackberry notes; the balance is good and nose is leather plus black fruit such as mentioned. Very good value, but drink now. 87 points. Read More

  • Orofino Beleza 2007

    Snoothrank:

This Bordeaux style blend rounding out nicely with just a whiff of oak upon uncorking; there is then a good supply of blackberry, plum, and vanilla both on the nose and on entry. Like some Washington and BC Merlot-Cabernet blends, there is some lack of depth (core), but this is the nature of the beast. A decent wine, but drink up. 87 points Read More

  • Terravista Vineyards Fandango 2013

    Snoothrank:

This wine is the colour of many Rías Baixas wines I've enjoyed over the years and is quite redolent of that familiar peach and ginger I remember - notwithstanding the credit-worthy Verdejo component. Good acidity and more peach on the palate with a fruity, lingering finish. Some bitterness on the follow-through, but this is a most elegant wine... Read More
