Bordeaux Controlée, a.k.a. Bordeaux AOC, is an appellation covering wines produced all over the Bordeaux region of France. These are wines that are not produced from grapes grown exclusively in the specific AOCs such as Margaux or Pomerol, but are either sourced from a variety of different vineyards or use different grape blends and aging methods otherwise not permitted within the other AOCs. These are considered the Bordeaux bargain wines, and in most cases, lack the aging potential and grace of more prestigious appellations. However, in the right hands, these can still be excellent values with good flavor structure.

The grapes consist of all the regional grapes, produced as single varietal releases or in blends. For reds, these are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Carmenère, and Petit Verdot. For whites, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Muscadelle, Ugni Blanc, Colombard, Mauzac, and Ondenc. Styles include dry reds, whites, and rosé and the Read more »
