Wachau Wine

The Wachau is a wine-producing sub-region located in the far west of Austria’s Niederosterreich region. It is also Austria’s best wine-producing region. The grapes that display its greatness are Gruner Veltliner and Riesling. On loess soils, they show uncommon richness and decadence; on primary rock, they show grace and finesse. In 1983, several top growers, including such admired names as Jamek, Alzinger, F.X. Pichler, and Prager, formed the Vinea Wachau association. This association established three quality levels, based on ripeness, for the region’s wines. The lightest wines are called Steinfeder, the next ripest, Federspiel, and the ripest and richest of all, Smaragd. These are used only in the Wachau, but are very important, because many of Austria’s best wines carry these designations.
