Niederösterreich Wine

The Niederösterreich region of Austria (meaning lower Austria) is the country's largest wine-growing area, including eight specific wine growing regions. The regions include: Wachau, Carnuntum, Kremstal DAC, Kamptal DAC , Thermenregion, Wagram, Traisental DAC, and Weinvertel DAC. The region has three major climactic zones: The Weinvertel, the region along the Danube river with adjoining valleys west of Vienna and a warmer, Pannonian climate in the south-east of the Niederösterreich. Gruener Veltliner is the most widely grown grape of the region accounting for 44% of the area's production, but Riesling, Roter Veltliner and other white varietals are very prominent here as well. Red varieties such as Pinot Noir, Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch are more popular in the areas closest to Burgenland such as Carnuntum. – Description from Constance Chamberlain

  • Fred Loimer Riesling Lenz Kamptal Austria 2011

    Snoothrank:

Mineral and floral on the nose, with a faint wash of blue flowers that yields to an almost gooseberry like fruit over slightly musky base notes. This is a ripe yet tense wine that hits the palate with a smack of minerality that defines the wine. There are nice framing notes of clear apple skin and citrus pith fruit, but the rocks take center sta... Read More

  • Schloss Gobelsburg Riesling Alte Reben 2007

    Snoothrank:

A little patience, damn it!Do not rely on the lightness of this wine at the opening. It took over 24 hours to grasp the full potential and it has not waned in the following days. Guarantee of infanticide. Concentration and sweetness are balanced by nervousness. Read More

  • Grooner Gruner Veltliner 2010

    Snoothrank:

Very interesting..definitely vegetable in nature. Tart green apple, icy citrus, cabbage, touch of mineral, touch of tropical fruit, white pepper, moderate alcohol, I don't exactly like it, but I know this is food friendly and with the right match I don't doubt this could be great. Read More

  • Weingut Pfaffl Austrian Cherry 2011

    Snoothrank:

Tight but clean on the nose with subtle dried herb notes early on, followed by black fruit, gravel and cinnamon. The wine enters the mouth showing very little fruit but lots of acid, though it does broaden in the mouth, gaining a certain level of richness. There are some fairly significant tannins here, soft but abundant, and lovely hints of vio... Read More
