Burgenland Wine

Burgenland is a major wine-producing region located in Austria’s southeast. It is Austria’s warmest region, guaranteeing ideal ripeness year after year. When Austria was a part of the Austro-Hugarian Empire, it was known primarily for its Ausbruch-style dessert wines, which are still made there. The influence of a large, shallow lake called Neusiedlersee creates an ideal environment for botrytis, encouraging the production of these dessert wines.

Today, Burgenland is best-known as Austria’s preeminent producer of quality dry red wines. The local red wines are produced mostly from Blaufrankisch, St-Laurent, and Zweigelt, though international varieties also make an appearance.

Burgenland’s subregions are Mittelburgenland, which produces mostly reds from Blaufrankisch and Zweigelt; Neusiedlersee, which is known for botrytized dessert wines; Neusiedlersee-Hugelland, the home of Ausbruch wines; and Sudburgenland, another region that produces mostly red wines.

  • Juris Zweigelt 2010

Soft and slightly funky on the nose with notes of something vaguely recalling boiled pig skin lying under beautiful candied medicinal and violet tones. Theres some dried mushroom here as well, a nice base of juniper-laced blackberries. Broad and soft on entry, this is really open for business texturally with finely polished fruit tannins and jui... • Anita & Hans Nittnaus Burgenland Kalk and Schiefer Blaufrankisch 2006

A bit of funk greets the nose, reductive, though there is a deep gaminess here, with spicy mint and juniper framing notes to the dried berry fruit. Silky on entry, this shows fine focus in the mouth with a lovely nuanced Burgundian quality to the flavors. Fresh and dried berries are joined by dried flower petals, hints of beet root and spice, an... Read More

  • Zantho Blaufränkisch 2008

Showing noticeable evolution on the nose, with hints of caramel and oxidation laying under a nice base of raspberry reduction and hints of bay leaf, black pepper and melon rind. • Zantho Zweigelt 2010

Hints of cocoa, dried herbs and dried meat great the nose followed by some talcy mineral spice and jammy wild raspberry fruit. This is wide in the mouth, and feels a touch soft even though it has fine acidity. There are some tannins but this does seem to be awfully easy going. The palate recalls the nose, with faint impressions of cocoa and lico... Read More

  • Austria Sektkellerei Szigeti Pinot Noir Brut NV

I believe each wine should be judged on its own merits and not in competition with others. In that regard, this wine is simply fabulous. For $4.99 you can't beat this with a stick. Not too sweet, not too dry, not too bubbly. At $4.99 it's cheaper than not drinking. Drank a bottle with some stir fry and the pairing was delightful. I'd keep a bott... Read More
