Burgenland Wine

Burgenland is a major wine-producing region located in Austria’s southeast. It is Austria’s warmest region, guaranteeing ideal ripeness year after year. When Austria was a part of the Austro-Hugarian Empire, it was known primarily for its Ausbruch-style dessert wines, which are still made there. The influence of a large, shallow lake called Neusiedlersee creates an ideal environment for botrytis, encouraging the production of these dessert wines.

Today, Burgenland is best-known as Austria’s preeminent producer of quality dry red wines. The local red wines are produced mostly from Blaufrankisch, St-Laurent, and Zweigelt, though international varieties also make an appearance.

Burgenland’s subregions are Mittelburgenland, which produces mostly reds from Blaufrankisch and Zweigelt; Neusiedlersee, which is known for botrytized dessert wines; Neusiedlersee-Hugelland, the home of Ausbruch wines; and Sudburgenland, another region that produces mostly red wines.
