Austrian Wine

Austria is located in the heart of Europe and is known for incredibly dry whites of exceptional quality. Lesser known to the United States are Austria’s red wines which range from classic fruity reds to powerful Reserves. In past years, Austrian wines have been lumped in with their neighbors Germany and Alsace, but recently the Austrian Wine industry has taken America by storm, gaining headway with its most popular grape: Grüner Veltliner a.k.a. GruV, an acidic white grape characteristically described by white pepper, green apple and citrus. Twenty-five years ago, Austria is said to have been a different wine country. In 2008, the country exported more than ever before and is expected to increase steadily for a number of years to come. Austria’s wines are produced in the Weinland Österreich in the far Eastern corner of the country surrounding Vienna and is divided into sixteen key winemaking regions. Each region varies in climate from hot to cool and is made up of a combination of soils: slate Read more »

Austria on Snooth

  • Laurenz V. Grüner Veltliner Singing Laurenz Und Sophie 2010

    Snoothrank:

Peach and citrus notes on the nose with some floral notes. Really good balanced complexity on the palate - floral with fruit and very strong (yet soft) tangy citrus notes, great acid. Good length. I thought this wine was much better served at a slightly warmer temperature than I would normally serve these types of crisp whites. It paired well wi... Read More

  • Pratsch Gruner Veltliner 2011

    Snoothrank:

Lightly aromatic on the nose with hints o white pepper and dried grass accenting the lime and green pear aromas. Rather spritzy right out of the bottle. This shows off rather assertively dried herbal and lightly spicy flavors with good intensity. There's some subtle fruit here, lime pith and melon rind, but this is as savory as it is fruity and ... • Karl Lagler Gruner Veltliner Federspiel Burgberg 2011

    Snoothrank:

Pops on the nose with an early rush of yeastiness followed by aromas of mineral talc, violet floral notes, light hints of peach and tangerine topped with a light minty note. This enters the mouth with a fair amount of richness and intensity, very round on the palate though with nice mineral/acid cut. There's a lot of peppery flavor here along wit... Read More

  • Wimmer Czerny Gruner Veltliner Frumberg 2011

    Snoothrank:

Dusty and soft on the nose with honeycomb and smoky, gravel aromas that gain intensity and are joined by hints of tree bark and white pepper with air. A touch soft in the mouth, this is broad and supple with nice mineral and slightly candied citrus and pear flavors. Showing nice detail on a modest scale, this gains lovely floral notes on the ba... • Rosi Schuster Blaufrankish 2009

    Snoothrank:

I found this to be a very lively quaff with lots of acid and note of red cherry and raspberry. It drinks very much like a zippy pinot noir. Not a whole lot of balance, however. Read More

  • Nigl Grüner Veltliner Eiswein 2008
