Austrian Wine

Austria is located in the heart of Europe and is known for incredibly dry whites of exceptional quality. Lesser known to the United States are Austria’s red wines which range from classic fruity reds to powerful Reserves. In past years, Austrian wines have been lumped in with their neighbors Germany and Alsace, but recently the Austrian Wine industry has taken America by storm, gaining headway with its most popular grape: Grüner Veltliner a.k.a. GruV, an acidic white grape characteristically described by white pepper, green apple and citrus. Twenty-five years ago, Austria is said to have been a different wine country. In 2008, the country exported more than ever before and is expected to increase steadily for a number of years to come. Austria’s wines are produced in the Weinland Österreich in the far Eastern corner of the country surrounding Vienna and is divided into sixteen key winemaking regions. • Martinshof Friends Brut (CH,PN) 2007

    Snoothrank:

A white wine, but with a much meatier, richer, nose than expected - strawberries on the nose. Very soft, with firm acids, however, there's some sugar to soften it. Finishes on soft red fruits and delicate yeast. Read More

  • Weingut Christ Gelber Muskateller 2008

    Snoothrank:

Intense peach and lychee and mangos on the nose. This wine displays lots of acidity - even to a prickle. Nice and oily, with a touch of spice, however, generally its a clean, crisp wine with a nutty finish. Read More

  • Günter Triebaumer Sauvignon Blanc Rust 2006

    Snoothrank:

Color is a clear pale yellow with greenish hues. Hints of fresh melon and fresh cut grass, mix with subtle aromas of grapefruit. Very crisp on the palate, with a hearty helping of acidity. Lots of lemon and lime characteristics are laced around a vibrant mineral core. It can wear on the palate after a while and starts to beg for food. It wou... Read More

  • Walter Skoff Sauvignon Blanc Royal 2007

    Snoothrank:

Amazing smell! I've never smelled and tasted such a wonderful white barrique wine like this! I like wines which are fermented and/or aged in an oak barrel but I've never tasted neither a red nor a white wine which was so intensive like this. The result of a deep nose of oak is a wine with exact 14.5 % vol - Try it!! Read More
