Austrian Wine

Austria is located in the heart of Europe and is known for incredibly dry whites of exceptional quality. Lesser known to the United States are Austria’s red wines which range from classic fruity reds to powerful Reserves. In past years, Austrian wines have been lumped in with their neighbors Germany and Alsace, but recently the Austrian Wine industry has taken America by storm, gaining headway with its most popular grape: Grüner Veltliner a.k.a. GruV, an acidic white grape characteristically described by white pepper, green apple and citrus. Twenty-five years ago, Austria is said to have been a different wine country. In 2008, the country exported more than ever before and is expected to increase steadily for a number of years to come. Austria’s wines are produced in the Weinland Österreich in the far Eastern corner of the country surrounding Vienna and is divided into sixteen key winemaking regions. Each region varies in climate from hot to cool and is made up of a combination Read more »

  • Zantho Zweigelt 2006

    Snoothrank:

This packs in a ton of crisp red fruit on a lean lithe frame that makes it perfect for summer picnics. The flavors tend to the cranberry and wild cherry end of the spectrum with mouthwatering acidity, just a whisper of tannin and hints of pepper and dried flowers. 88pts Read More

  • Fred Loimer Grüner Veltliner Langenlois Lois 2007

    Snoothrank:

This is so simple yet with a lightness to the green apple and lime zest fruit that is almost irresistible. Its got a bit of body to it so while its super refreshing it can work well at the dinner table, or lunch table for that matter. Try it with simple grilled shrimp or fried white fish. 86pts Read More

  • Schloss Gobelsburg Riesling Gaisberg 2008

    Snoothrank:

I felt the 2006 and 2007 vintages had overbearing acidity compared to earlier vintages (although the 2006 is drinking well now in 2009), the 2008 seems to have a touch more botrytis and is back to the classic earlier style of the wines. Lovely sweetness with mandarin/grapefruit/lime marmalade flavours, well balanced with crisp acidity. It is a... Read More

  • Laurenz V Friendly Veltliner NV

    Snoothrank:

The Singing Grüner Veltliner was a clear lemony yellow. The wine had fresh, wet stone aromas that were followed by hints of green apples and green grapes. In the mouth, the wine had very minerally flavors, with only a touch of fruitinesssome apricots, along with the green apples and green grapes I found on the nose. A crisp acidity played well...
