Margaret River Wine

Margaret River is a wine region located in Western Australia. Because the majority of that state is too warm for viticulture, the area, also known as South West Australia, is where the wine regions are clustered due to its coastal climate influences. John Gladstone is credited for surveying Margaret River in the 1960s and recommending it as a potential high quality grape-growing region.

Cape Naturaliste, Cape Leeuwin, the Indian Ocean and Geographe Bay all contribute to the Mediterranean growing conditions that favor the more refined “European” style wines for which Margaret River is known. Unlike the big “fruit salads” produced in other parts of the country, Cabernets and Merlots are more akin to Bordeaux, Shiraz is earthy and gamey like that of the Rhone, Chardonnay is balanced and minerally, Chenin Blancs resemble those of the Loire Valley in dryness and the Sauvignon Blancs and Semillons take on a more grassy appeal.

Semillon, as in the Hunter Valley, is the star varietal Read more »

  • Evans Tate & Breathing Space Margaret River Sauvignon Blanc 2012

Melon and citrus aromas are light but pleasant, with mostly honeydew, lemon and clementine leading the charge. Flavors are fresh and grassy, lemon lime and more melon flavors are driving with some herbal notes to follow, mostly bay leaf and a touch of basil. Acidity is not overwhelming but certainly present. Clean, nice wine. Read More

  • White wines were never at the top of my favorites list. Then one day a few months ago, I ordered a case of Margaret River chardonnay from Cameron Hughes. That changed everything. I had never tasted a chardonnay as interesting as this one. First, the boquet is fantastic and is not floral. Then the tasting of this wine was so exciting because ther...
