for this region?

The South West is a zone that encompasses the best known growing regions of the Western Australia state. Since most of the state is too hot for viticulture, this is the area where conditions become more temperate due to coastal influences and most of the quality wine-making is clustered, starting just south of Perth.

The regions within South West are:

    * Pemberton
    * Margaret River
    * Blackwood River Valley
    * Geographe
    * Peel
    * Perth Hills
    * Swan District

For more information about the individual districts and varietals, please see Western Australia.

South West Australia on Snooth

  • Cabernet Sauvignon Margaret River 2009

    Snoothrank:

    AUD$30. Intense dark ruby color. Youthful aromas that are slightly restrained, needs a bit of work and swirling to unveil more aromas, notes of blackcurrants, blackberries, warm scrub bush, and hint of blackpepper. A full-bodied wine, robust tannin structure with high acidity. Flavours of blackberry with cedar and spicy seasonings, and pepper on... Read More

  • Fraser Gallop Cabernet Sauvignon Margaret River 2009

    Snoothrank:

    AUD$30. A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon with Petit Verdot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Made from destemmed fruit. Aged for 16 months in French oak barrels, a third new oak. Intense inky ruby color, lifted notes of blackcurrants, blueberry, dark chocolate overtones and hints of violet florals. A med+ to full-bodied wine with high acidity... Read More

  • Cullen Wines Red Bordeaux Blend Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Diana Madeline 2008

    Snoothrank:

    Since becoming biodynamic the alcohol in Cullen's wines has decreased; in my opinion giving slightly lighter but far more interesting and elegant wines- stunning! Read More

  • Frankland Estate Riesling Frankland River Rocky Gully 2011

    Snoothrank:

    Whistle-clean on the nose and palate. A very pure riesling without spice or petrol notes, just neat citrus fruit and a hint of minerality in a technically perfect offering. Read More

  • Leeuwin Estate Riesling Margaret River Art Series 2010

    Snoothrank:

    This is herbal and a little stinky right out of the bottle though with time it picks up sweet grapefruit aromas with a hints of apricot and passion fruit adding complexity. A bit loosely knit on entry, this is easy drinking and transparent but lacks both depth of flavor and complexity. The finish is a bit short as well. 84pts Read More

  • Plantagenet Riesling Great Southern 2010

    Snoothrank:

    A touch heavy on the nose with an underlay of dried herb tones and some apple blossom fruit. Spritzy on entry, this has enough acidity to keep it balanced. It does lack some height in the mouth and is rather languid on the palate, with a soft richness to the lemon cream and key lime pie flavors. The finish shows a nice edge of minerality that li... • Howard Park Shiraz Margaret River Leston 2008

    Snoothrank:

    These Western Oz products are deliciously European (read: Rhone Valley) with a dollop of Australian cheek. After twisting off the screw-cap closure, and anxiously awaiting the dissipation of the oak, the nose of this wine is reminiscent of cola bottle jelly candy and cherry preserve. There is some sneeze-like pepper on entry, with silky, light t... Read More

  • Flametree Frankland River Shiraz 2010

    Snoothrank:

    $30 direct from winery. Fruit was from two vineyards. Rhone strains of yeast were used for fermentation, and maturation was in used and new French oak barrels. Intense ruby colour that clings to the glass. Lifted youthful aromas of freshly cracked peppercorns, savoury plum, cherry liquor and a hint of dried herbs. There is almost a sweet concent... • Vasse Felix Chardonnay Margaret River Western Australia 2010

    Snoothrank:

    Very pale yellow straw colour. Fermented with wild yeats and maturedfor 9 months in French oak barrels. Youthful spritzy aromas of white peach, honey melon and hint of buttered cashews. A dry, med+ bodied wine with plenty of acidity but that is partially hidden by the rounded feel on the palate. 12.5% alc. Flavours of white peach, squeeze of lem... Read More
