Yarra Valley Wine

The Yarra Valley is the best known region within Port Phillip in the state of Victoria in Australia. Port Phillip is often referred to as the “Melbourne Dress Circle” due to the trend toward small scale “boutique” wine-making that is showcased in the city’s bistros and winebars. The Yarra Valley is the clear star of the Port Phillip wine scene.

It’s one of the country’s oldest regions, with the first grapes brought over and planted in the 1880s. Though it managed to escape the Phylloxera louse infestation that ravaged Europe’s vines and also those in some parts of the country, it still experienced a lull starting in the 1920s due to the trend in big, fruity and fortified wines. But it came back big time in the 1960s and 70s with wine-makers focusing on quality, starting with Wantima Estate and followed by Fergusson, Yarra Yering, Seville, Yering Station and Chateau Yarrinya (now De Bortoli) and others.

  • Yering Station Pinot Noir Yarra Valley 2007

Mild red fruit aroma, very minerally body with bits of richer strawberry fruit coming out in the finish, which is dry with kind of a saccharine quality. Pretty typical pinot noir, light bodied. Read More

  • The following post is straight off my blog. I think it's worth making a ... both the Peninsula and the Yarra Valley and this climactic upswing was captured astutely by the winemakers. On a slightly conservative note, after tasting the first two Pinot Noirs from the 2006 vintage, I am not convinced wines from this region are made to aged past a... Read More

  • Yering Station Pinot Noir-Yarra Yalley 2008

This is fruity and stemmy on the nose with a delightful aromatic profile that blends sour cherry and raspberry jam with a hint of cinnamon and a handful of sage and bay leaves. Crisp on entry with nice, juicy acidity and stiff little tannins, this shows off early cherry pit, dried herb and old wood flavors before laying on some gentle cranberry ... Read More

  • Little Yering Pinot Noir Australien Yering Station 2008

Heavy in oaky/vanilla aromas, with strong notes of peaches and red fruit coming out, along with menthol. The body attacks smoothly and gently, with light rounded acids, which are pleasant and contribute to the apricot notes on the finish. Read More

  • Innocent Bystander Pinot Gris Yarra Valley 2011

Quite ripe on the nose with slightly waxy yellow fruits that quickly turn a bit flat and herbal with air. Soft and broad in the mouth with a nice mineral edge and good clarity, though this is a bit thin on the mid-palate. The acidity really drives this, lending the wine citric and slightly bitter apple peel flavors and a nice mineral wash to the... Read More
