The Yarra Valley is the best known region within Port Phillip in the state of Victoria in Australia. Port Phillip is often referred to as the “Melbourne Dress Circle” due to the trend toward small scale “boutique” wine-making that is showcased in the city’s bistros and winebars. The Yarra Valley is the clear star of the Port Phillip wine scene.

It’s one of the country’s oldest regions, with the first grapes brought over and planted in the 1880s. Though it managed to escape the Phylloxera louse infestation that ravaged Europe’s vines and also those in some parts of the country, it still experienced a lull starting in the 1920s due to the trend in big, fruity and fortified wines. But it came back big time in the 1960s and 70s with wine-makers focusing on quality, starting with Wantima Estate and followed by Fergusson, Yarra Yering, Seville, Yering Station and Chateau Yarrinya (now De Bortoli) and others.

  • Airlie Bank Shiraz Viognier 2007

    Snoothrank:

Shiraz 97% Viognier 3%Co-fermented shiraz and Viognier have been neatly worked to produce a highly perfumed, deliciously appealing medium-bodied red. The spicy palate displays subtle savoury overtones. Fine tannins and understated oak support the smooth round palate. For around $15 it's a great buy90 pts Read More

  • Yarra Valley Quintet Bordeaux Blend Mount Mary 2001

    Snoothrank:

The 2001 is past its maturity, you can tell it has just went over its peak and is now fading fast.It has a tight astringent nose and tart taste- the fruit is gone and I am surprised that a Bordeaux Blend couldnt make it past 8 years! Read More

  • Sticks Chardonnay Yarra Valley 2005

    Snoothrank:

Wasn't expecting much as its fairly mass produced but this is cheap, cheerful and very nice. Light straw, tropical fruit but rather creamy. Has the qualities I like in a Chardonnay, not too acidic and full of fruit. Read More
