The Yarra Valley is the best known region within Port Phillip in the state of Victoria in Australia. Port Phillip is often referred to as the “Melbourne Dress Circle” due to the trend toward small scale “boutique” wine-making that is showcased in the city’s bistros and winebars. The Yarra Valley is the clear star of the Port Phillip wine scene.

It’s one of the country’s oldest regions, with the first grapes brought over and planted in the 1880s. Though it managed to escape the Phylloxera louse infestation that ravaged Europe’s vines and also those in some parts of the country, it still experienced a lull starting in the 1920s due to the trend in big, fruity and fortified wines. But it came back big time in the 1960s and 70s with wine-makers focusing on quality, starting with Wantima Estate and followed by Fergusson, Yarra Yering, Seville, Yering Station and Chateau Yarrinya (now De Bortoli) and others.

  • Giant Steps Yarra Valley Miller Vineyard Shiraz Zzb 2006

    Snoothrank:

A wine that shows a peppercorn or two in the nose, it's swimmingly alive with fresh red fruits. Incredibly intense, rich, but not heavy, it's complexity is continuing to evolve, making it a sensational pick for the next 5 years. WineryInsider. Read More

  • Yering Station Chardonnay Yarra Valley 2005

    Snoothrank:

Silky smooth, not overly oakey and sweet and not too acidic either. Subtle peach and melon flavours and slightly amber colour make this certainly one of the better Aussie Whites we have had for around the £10 mark. I like this area of Australia a lot, more so for the reds so thought giving a white a try and not disappointed at all. Read More

  • Yarra Yering Sangiovese Yarra Valley 2004

    Snoothrank:

Yarra Yering never seems to fail me and perhaps a little more off the normal track, this is a an excellent, spicy yet warm and smooth red. Cherry and raspberry along with a slight pepper, herby but cooked aspect add to a wine so smooth I can drink effortlessly. Read More

  • Rochford Chardonnay Latitude 2003

    Snoothrank:

Lavender, Peach Nectar and a hint of orange zest on the nose. Huge buttery palette with rich Lemon, Lime, Pink Grapefruit and Tart Strawberry. It even has a finish the lingers. If you have a bottle of this sitting at home, it is worth drinking now. It has lost almost all of it's acidity and I fear is at the end of it's life. I had 6 bottles in th... Read More

    Snoothrank:

Shiraz 97% Viognier 3%Co-fermented shiraz and Viognier have been neatly worked to produce a highly perfumed, deliciously appealing medium-bodied red.
