Yarra Valley Wine

The Yarra Valley is the best known region within Port Phillip in the state of Victoria in Australia. Port Phillip is often referred to as the “Melbourne Dress Circle” due to the trend toward small scale “boutique” wine-making that is showcased in the city’s bistros and winebars. The Yarra Valley is the clear star of the Port Phillip wine scene.

It’s one of the country’s oldest regions, with the first grapes brought over and planted in the 1880s. Though it managed to escape the Phylloxera louse infestation that ravaged Europe’s vines and also those in some parts of the country, it still experienced a lull starting in the 1920s due to the trend in big, fruity and fortified wines. But it came back big time in the 1960s and 70s with wine-makers focusing on quality, starting with Wantima Estate and followed by Fergusson, Yarra Yering, Seville, Yering Station and Chateau Yarrinya (now De Bortoli) and others.

  • Yes, their wines surprised me. The chardonnay too. I expected nice wines ... ... ... PNS, so much so that the Yarra Valley and Mornington Peninsula have been forgotten. • To be honest, I don't have a favourite from Rochford because I can't say I was impressed with any of their wines. They're good drinking, BBQ quaffers.. but nothing outstanding. There are lots of other wines from the Yarra which offer much more in the same price bracket. Especially from the 2012 vintage. I guess that's one of the key differences: ... Read More

  • Have had both the NV and the vintage brut several times. Relatively easy to find up in Japan, where I currently reside. Haven't had the blend with shiraz in it but even before your warning I wouldn't have particularly wanted to.In this marketplace, view it as a step up from most cavas and proseccos (though not the very best of them). I haven't h... Read More

  • You seem to like the pinot noir from this winery quite well. Would be interesting to hear more about their history with that varietal, as well as PN's experience as a whole in Oz! Don't hear so much about it, across such a large continent, except maybe down in Tasmania. NZ steals the show, as far as the world's knowledge of antipodean PN... Read More
