Geelong has the dubious distinction of being the first area in Australia to be affected by phylloxera, the plant louse that is a major pest to vines, which was discovered in 1875. At the time, Victoria was the pre-eminent wine producing state, and Geelong one of its most important regions. In a vain attempt to halt the spread of phylloxera across Victoria, an enforced removal of all vineyards meant an 80-year hiatus in commercial wine production throughout the State. Replanting commenced in 1966 and production resumed in the early 1970s. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vie for supremacy with Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon and have done so since the rebirth of the area. In terms of ripening temperatures and sunshine hours, this open and strongly maritime-influenced region has a climate approximating that of Bordeaux and Burgundy.
