Port Phillip is a zone within the Victoria wine region of Australia. Some call it “Melbourne’s dress circle” for its trend of high-quality boutique wineries located near this major city where they are showcased in bistros and winebars. However, these wines, particularly from the Yarra Valley, have also made a splash in other parts of the world.

The Port Phillip Bay provides cooling climate conditions for most of the area, but parts further inland experience hotter weather. For this reason, the region boasts an array of styles from sparkling, to dry white to light and full-bodied red and sweet.

The subregions of Port Phillip are:

    * Geelong
    * Macedon Ranges
    * Mornington Peninsula
    * Sunburry
    * Yarra Valley

Other wineries which do not fit into these zones have cropped up outside the eastern suburbs of Melbourne and French Island, such as Cannibal Creek, Chestnut Hill, French Island Read more »

Port Phillip on Snooth

  • Yering Station Shiraz Blend Yarra Valley Shiraz Viognier 2008

    Snoothrank:

    Truffle on the nose and spicy, with fine cedar and cigar leaf accents to the plummy, slightly pruney and fairly peppery fruit. This is opulent and fills the mouth with plummy fruit, topped by aromatic notes of cedar, mulberry and apricot with hints of green olive. The texture is lovely and ripe, but not fat or obvious. The fruit turns progressiv... Read More

  • Innocent Bystander Shiraz Blend Shiraz Viognier 2007

    Snoothrank:

    Floral and intense on the nose with a touch of reduction highlighting an asphalt undertone. Plenty of smoky oak, white pepper and violet notes add complexity. Soft and full on entry, a spine of acid does perk up on the mid-palate. There is ore reduction evident on the palate here, but some air helps to clear it up, revealing finely rendered blac... • Innocent Bystander Shiraz Blend Shiraz Viognier 2007

    Snoothrank:

    Lilac, violet and graceful floral aromas of Viognier intermix beautifully with the heavy, black fruit from the Shiraz. A bit of savoriness makes this wine deep and complex - soft and smooth on the palette, yet finishing with a spicy kick of raspberry spice. Read More

  • Green Point Shiraz 2004

    Snoothrank:

    Heavy smells of blackberry and pepper. Deep reddish purple color. Slightly sweet yet very dry. This wine compliments apple smoked cheddar cheese to a mild degree. I have found that this wine is much better than expected. Read More

  • Marquee Artisan Wines Signature Chardonnay Yarra Valley 2008

    Snoothrank:

    This is downright oaky and smells of dried herbs and hay. Theres something vaguely mineral here, with almond husks and some heirloom apple notes too. Rather broad and caressing on the palate, this really spreads out in the mouth. While it lacks some height, it does delivere a lovely core of almond brittle, tangerine and peach fruit. Theres a tou... Read More

  • Yarra Yering Dry No 1-Cabernet Sauvignon Malbec Merlot Petit Verdot Blend Rot Yarra Valley 2005

    Snoothrank:

    Apology that I don't know how to add a new vintage as the one I tasted is 2004 instead. It is quite perfumery when opened and at first it is quite earthy and later on with hints of bark. On the palate, it is full of dark fruits with distinctive blackcurrant. Typical Australian red with more close to elegance and subtle. 93+ points.P.S. I've got ... Read More

  • Coldstream Hills Pinot Noir Yarra Valley 2007

    Snoothrank:

    My wine club did a Pinot Noir tasting this month. This was one of the recommended wines for the tasting, but our wine buyer was hesitant as Australia is not known for Pinot Noir. I poured it first, expecting it to be the worst of the 5 we tasted. WOW! This is one terrific Pinot! Very lush and flavorful, without a harsh finish like some Pino... Read More
