Port Phillip is a zone within the Victoria wine region of Australia. Some call it “Melbourne’s dress circle” for its trend of high-quality boutique wineries located near this major city where they are showcased in bistros and winebars. However, these wines, particularly from the Yarra Valley, have also made a splash in other parts of the world.
The Port Phillip Bay provides cooling climate conditions for most of the area, but parts further inland experience hotter weather. For this reason, the region boasts an array of styles from sparkling, to dry white to light and full-bodied red and sweet.
The subregions of Port Phillip are:
* Geelong
* Macedon Ranges
* Mornington Peninsula
* Sunburry
* Yarra Valley
Other wineries which do not fit into these zones have cropped up outside the eastern suburbs of Melbourne and French Island, such as Cannibal Creek, Chestnut Hill, French Island Read more »

Little Yering Pinot Noir Australien Yering Station 2008
Snoothrank:Heavy in oaky/vanilla aromas, with strong notes of peaches and red fruit coming out, along with menthol. The body attacks smoothly and gently, with light rounded acids, which are pleasant and contribute to the apricot notes on the finish. Read More

Innocent Bystander Pinot Gris Yarra Valley 2011
Snoothrank:Quite ripe on the nose with slightly waxy yellow fruits that quickly turn a bit flat and herbal with air. Soft and broad in the mouth with a nice mineral edge and good clarity, though this is a bit thin on the mid-palate. The acidity really drives this, lending the wine citric and slightly bitter apple peel flavors and a nice mineral wash to the... Read More

Innocent Bystander Chardonnay Yarra Valley 2010
Snoothrank:It really shows that this is from cooler-climate Victoria in Australia's south & should silence those who still believe Australia's chardonnays are big & rich. This is reminiscent of Meursault or Sonoma chardonnay: fresh pineapple nose & palate leads to a delicate nutty finish which is long for the price. Read More

Dominique Portet Champagne Blend Yarra Valley Brut Rose Ld NV
Snoothrank:AUD$24. A blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, this is a simple straight-forward sparkling wine that passes for a no-brainer in terms of casual drinking. Salmon colour or given its French heritage il de perdrix, coarse mousse texture, it exudes aromas of red berries and red currants. 13% alc. Very taut on the palate, clean flavours and finishes d... Moorooduc 'Mcintyre Vineyard' Pinot Noir Mornington Peninsula Victoria 2009
Snoothrank:Clear, medium dark crimson colour. Clean, youthful aromas of crushed red berries and dried cranberries, sprinkling of ground clove. A dry, med+ bodied wine with moderate acidity. This wine has a silky texture, buffered by a subtle load of grainy tannins which carry the prominant red currants and cherry flavours. Easy, long finish. 14% alc. Drink... Read More
