Port Phillip on Snooth

November 2009

Wasn't expecting much as its fairly mass produced but this is cheap, cheerful and very nice. Light straw, tropical fruit but rather creamy. Has the qualities I like in a Chardonnay, not too acidic and full of fruit.

Sticks Chardonnay 2005

Starting at $16.19 Snoothrank: 3.5/5

Pale colour, fragrant nose - rose petals, dry back palate, soft taste, low alcohol. Similar to southern french rose, good with provencal fish soup

Port Phillip Estate Salasso Rose Rose NV

Starting at $17.74 Snoothrank: 3/5

Blackcurrant and cherry, some acidity and length, really rather good for what is billed as an entry-level wine.

A little pricey but very nice Chard. Buttery and vanilla-y but not over the top. Nice long zesty finish.

Kooyong Chardonnay Clonale 2006

Starting at $29.99 Snoothrank: 3/5

Dont take any tours, from Newcastle, drive to the Hunter (+/- 1hr) and make sure the driver does NOT drink... if you go on a tour; you will be taken only to the wineries they guides promote and you would waste valuable...

From Australia, I would recommend some Pinot Noir from Tasmania or the Mornington Peninsula, Chardonnay from Margaret River or a Semillon or Verdelho from the Hunter Valley... or better still, a nice fortified muscat from...

Great French/Rhone focused wine, oak, fruit, soft tannins all in balance; this is a great wine, enjoy on its own or along good food. The sort of wine you take out for guests that have an educated palate and/or don't like...
