There is a distinctive cast to this gold country; a wiry toughness, a slightly parched feel with old tailings dumps and hillocks marking long-abandoned mines. Following the discovery of gold in 1851, both gold and grapes were the region's driving economic forces throughout the 19th century. The arrival of phylloxera in 1893 marked the end of the grape era though gold sputtered on into the 20th century. It was not until 1969 that vines reappeared. Since that time the Bendigo region has re-established itself as a foremost producer of rich, concentrated red wines based on Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Though the terrain is undulating and small, generally dry, creek beds are relatively common (Mount Alexander being the only significant variation in altitude), the north of the region is generally lower in elevation.
