This state was among the first to be planted with vinifera vines in the mid 19th century, particularly around the cool-climate Yarra Valley. However, it was not as lucky as other parts of the country to escape the deadly Phylloxera louse outbreak some thirty years later, and the industry suffered until the hybrid grafting solution was discovered in the early 20th century.

Victoria has six regions which in turn have many subregions:

    * Central Victoria, which has the Bendigo, Goulburn Valley, Heathecote, Strathbogie Ranges and Upper Goulburn, with many climates warm and cool. Thus it ranges from Read more »

Victoria on Snooth

  • And if you will permit me a tiny bit of thread drift: While we were in Mexico, ... F--go metric!) We drank Victoria beer, a tiny bit of very good mezcal, and one glass of wine each--mine was a Mexican Chard/Semillon split, my wife had a Chilean SB.  Both were pretty good, but I'm not running out to buy any--it just wasn't the right place to be... • De Bortoli "Db" Pinot Noir Yarra Valley Regional Reserve 2014

    Snoothrank:

Bright red cherry syrup aromas open in the glass with a touch of rose petal and some baking spice with a dose of sharp heat. In the mouth it's soft and smooth. There's a simple red cherry note throughout and not much development of other flavors or character. Still, it's approachable and refreshing.83 pts Read More

  • Best's Late Harvest Muscat 2005

    Snoothrank:

Pours a golden yellow color....this has deepened considerably since I first bought this bottle! Initial aromas that are floral, quickly followed by smells of peach, apricots, pears, and subtle grape sweetness. Flavors follow suit nicely with robust sweetness that doesn't overpower the palate and is clean on the finish, yet overall this is crea... Read More

  • De Bortoli Db Family Selection Chardonnay 2013

    Snoothrank:

Nectarine, pear and meyer lemon on the nose. Blades of grass on the palate deliver astringent yellow fruit flavors. Lemon drops galore. Marmalade and honeysuckle finish it up, fast and furious. Read More
