Mclaren Vale Wine

John Reynell planted grapes at Reynella in 1838 and later employed a young labourer named Thomas Hardy. In so doing, the foundations were being put in place for two wine dynasties that were to dominate the region for over a century. McLaren Vale became the model of the small winery before such enterprises became fashionable in other states, and it remains one of the most richly varied and highly developed areas in Australia, producing intensely flavoured and coloured red wines and similarly powerful whites. The region is bordered to the north by the city of Adelaide with Adelaide Hills to the east, Sellicks Hill Range to the south and the Gulf of St Vincent to the west. The landscape though ever changing is nonetheless invariably beautiful, with rivers—notably the Onkaparinga and its tributaries—hills, olive groves and forests all co-existing and confirming yet again the need for the all-important correct site selection. Hitherto it had been difficult to describe the official climate of McLaren Vale, as there was no local weather station and statistical data had to be taken from the Waite Institute, located in a southern suburb of Adelaide some 25 kilometres (15.5 miles) to the north. • D'Arenburg the Stump Jump Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre Mclaren Vale 2011

    Snoothrank:

Juicy fruit with a touch of bacon and soft tannins. Medium bodied. Not a CdP but on par with a good CdR. Really good value. Read More

  • D'Arenberg the Stump Jump Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre Mclaren Vale 2011

    Snoothrank:

Having not tried it for 8 or 9 years I was amazed that the "fruit bomb" I expected was a coarse dry spicy attempt to mimic a Rhone wine with the same grape composition and it has fallen flat. The high alcohol content has not changed and may be its only saving grace. Read More

  • Vinaceous Shiraz Limestone Coast Snake Charmer 2009

    Snoothrank:

Great value in this Australian McLaren Vale Shiraz. Most noticable are the fresh, slightly jammy blackberry notes. (I've never drank a wine that reminded me so much of blackberries.) But it doesn't stop there...this is well balanced wine with cloves and spice, great acidity, and good supple tannins.I think it's quite impressive for the price. Read More

  • Two Hands Cabernet Sauvignon Sexy Beast Mclaren Vale 2011

    Snoothrank:

Beefy and tight on the nose with a hint of cracked pepper accenting a slightly minty core of clear if small black fruit framed with coffee and lightly medicinal aromas. Ripe and rich in the mouth with lots of bright black fruit and nuanced sour plum, bitter chocolate and floral accent notes. There are some hard tannins here underpinning it all, ... Read More

  • Red Knot Chardonnay 2011

    Snoothrank:

A bit meaty on the nose, though rather fresh and bright with black fruit, soil, cracked pepper and grilled meaty aromas. Smooth and larger scaled in the mouth, the flavors here are simple but attractive combination of black currant and wood spice with a hint of leather and earth joining in. This is moderately rich but at the same time it offers ... Read More

  • Red Knot Chardonnay 2011

    Snoothrank:

Spicy on the nose with notes of black peppery married to spicy oak and resin framed plummy fruit. fairly full on entry and well balanced with some aggressive woody notes early on the palate followed by a mouthful of spicy and slightly jammy blueberry and strawberry fruit. Theres some gentle tannin here and plenty of spiking acidity keeping thing... Read More
