Coonawarra Wine

First planted to vines in 1890, the Coonawarra district has evolved through three distinct historical periods. The first was the era of the Penola Fruit Colony, and the early settlers such as the Redman family who, by dint of hard work, brought to reality the vision of its Scottish founder, John Riddoch. They generally prospered until the First World War. That era was followed by the troubled times of the Depression and the Second World War. It was during this second period that the original John Riddoch cellars were converted to a distillery, and it was only the Redman family who were able to maintain a continuous tradition of table wine production. The third historical period witnessed the appreciation by many other investors of the truly great attributes of this small, yet magic tract of terra rossa soil. Samuel Wynn recognised the quality of the wines from the region and, through his purchase of the original cellars in 1951, initiated what was tantamount to a renaissance of the region. This open with some bright cassis syrup, its a touch hot and sweet smelling with candied fruit and fresh apple tones. Turns moderately spicy with a touch of butter and brett lurking in the background. Sweet on entry in a fruit bombish kind of way yet with plenty of acidity and good, soft, extracted tannins, very fresh appley quality on the palat... Read More

  • Pillar Box Red Reserve Proprietary Blend Proprietary Blend 2006

Poured into a glass, color wise it has a dark reddish maroon tint and on the nose there is toasted oak and dark fruits with also some menthol or minty notes that are intriguing (I have decanted for over an hour). Upon the first sips, there is dark fruit (stewed cherries perhaps), powerful charred oak and some subtle spice. The finish is short an... Read More

  • Penley Estate Shiraz Coonawarra Hyland 2006

Very peppery on the nose, with currant tones, and it made me yearn for a well-done flank steak. Blackberry and truffle on the attack, and a sharp and tannic finish that would have to be more buttery to satisfy. Read More

  • Penley Estate Shiraz Coonawarra Hyland 2006

Rich, deep dark nose of licorice and a bit of black cherry. It's a hot nose, but not too terrible. Palate is rich, but shows a lot of brightness and a good, refreshing acidity. That alcohol -- wow. The tannins are pretty smooth, good deep dark fruit flavors of black pepper and a bit of spice. Finishes with dried fruit and a bit of cedar. Read More

  • Penley Estate Shiraz Coonawarra Hyland 2006

A little sweetness on the nose recalls sweetened coffee but the base of pepper, beef and ripe blackberry is cool and composed. There's a touch of mint and some background oak but pretty restrained and balanced nose. Juicy and medium bodied with a bit more of an oak tone in the mouth, the tannins are very fine grained adding a silky feel to the m... Read More

15% alcohol, and you feel it on the nose, but in the mouth its much better balanced. Very nice, mineral and mocha notes. Its medium acidity, but it somehow feels lighter in the mouth than I'd expect. Nice eucalyptus. The finish is all baked prunes and coffee and licorice. Read More
