The high country of Eden Valley has a long history of viticulture equaling that of the Barossa Valley. Joseph Gilbert planted the first vines at his Pewsey Vale vineyard in 1847, the same year as the first plantings by Johann Gramp in the Barossa Valley at Rowland Flat. Eden Valley covers an area as large as that of the Barossa Valley proper, albeit less intensely developed. It is justifiably famous for its Riesling, which vies for supremacy with that of the Clare Valley. This region is also home to such renowned Shiraz vineyards as Henschke's Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone and the Chardonnay vineyards of Mountadam. High Eden is an official subregion. Altitude is all-important in determining mesoclimate although aspect and slope are also important in this hilly terrain. Thus, at an altitude of around 500 metres (1640 feet) the Pewsey Vale, Heggies and High Eden vineyards at the southern end of the Eden Valley are appreciably cooler than the more northerly Henschke vineyards at an elevation of Read more »

  • Elderton Barossa Friends Vineyard Series Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

Reddish-Purple in the glass. Solid musty "cabernet" nose. Very fruity--dare I say sweetish--on the tip of the tongue, but then, as it travels through the mouth the irritating "sweetness" fades. Puckering tannin emerges, earthy flavors, maybe some mint. After the tannins fade on the finish, there is a nice linger. US$19.99 at Total Wines. Read More

  • Peter Lehmann Dry Riesling Eden Valley 2009

This smells downright flinty on the nose with a slightly vegetal undertone to the waxy fruit aromas that are topped with a fine jammy note of raspberry and golden raspberries. Very linear in the mouth with fine acidity lending this a bright, slightly nervous mouth feel. The fruit is pure and fresh with hints of the berries found on the nose, lay... Read More

  • Yalumba Viognier Eden Valley 2010

A little vanilla biscuit greets the nose along with subtle notes of ginger, jasmine, dried orange peel and curry leaf. Bright and round on entry, this quickly gains some impressive snap on the palate. Theres plenty of richness but the acid keeps this quite focused. The fruit is gentle if distinct with a creamy edge to the toasted almond, lime an... Read More

  • So some years back, I drank almost exclusively California wines, and pretty much Cab, Zin, Pinot, and, for whites, a bit of Sauv Blanc.  In my wine knowledge, I was more a hedgehog than I was my namesake animal the fox:  A fox knows many things, but a hedgehog knows one big thing.  In my case, I knew a few wines very well (at least for my overal...
