The high country of Eden Valley has a long history of viticulture equaling that of the Barossa Valley. Joseph Gilbert planted the first vines at his Pewsey Vale vineyard in 1847, the same year as the first plantings by Johann Gramp in the Barossa Valley at Rowland Flat. Eden Valley covers an area as large as that of the Barossa Valley proper, albeit less intensely developed. It is justifiably famous for its Riesling, which vies for supremacy with that of the Clare Valley. This region is also home to such renowned Shiraz vineyards as Henschke's Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone and the Chardonnay vineyards of Mountadam. High Eden is an official subregion. Altitude is all-important in determining mesoclimate although aspect and slope are also important in this hilly terrain. Thus, at an altitude of around 500 metres (1640 feet) the Pewsey Vale, Heggies and High Eden vineyards at the southern end of the Eden Valley are appreciably cooler than the more northerly Henschke vineyards at an elevation of Read more »

  • RBA, that shellfish platter looks amazing.  You would have had to roll me away after that. And one more thing - EMark, it's a screwcap!Yup, v v, that would have moved that wine way up on my list of favorites.  No corkscrew fiascoes (fiaschi?) with that one.The Mt. Eden designation really confused me on that wine, though.  I thought Mount Eden wa... Read More

2013 review. This is a nice wine for the price. It is a bit more tart than most pinots but not overly so that you're puckering your lips. I taste the spiced cherry notes more than anything. Read More

Better to stay in Santa Cruz or over in the Silicon Valley area if you're interested in them.DM is right I was probably over-optimistic about the driving times between those wineries and Monterey.  It's been a few years and, so, may no longer be a problem but there always was ... • Yalumba Eden Valley Fdr 1a 2010

    Snoothrank:

Powerful aromas of eucalyptus, tanning leather, oregano and a touch of texas barbecue. Flavors are explosive with bright red cherries, fresh acidity, candied currants, cinnamon and clove. This is a truly big wine, commanding and full of gripping tannins and loads of acidity. Bring lots of food with you to this party. Read More
